Oliver Street School Hosts Their First STEM Fair: This is Where the Magic Happens

More than 100 students create STEM Projects

[Newark, NJ – March 13, 2018] Oliver Street School students presented their science projects to the school community, parents and relatives at the First Annual STEM Fair at the school. More than 100 students participated in the fair which included students in grades 3 through 8.

Oliver Street School Principal Douglas J. Petty said, “I am proud of our students and their commitment to exploration of the mind. The projects presented at the STEM Fair exemplify a spirit of academic adventure and engagement and that is the core of student success.”

According to STEM Fair organizer Vice Principal Shana Burnett, Oliver Street School students presented their STEM fair projects to parents and the school community for two days. Ms. Burnett said that participating students were tasked with thinking and acting like engineers to imagine a real world problem they wanted solved. Students had to plan, imagine, and create a solution to this problem while applying Science, Technology, Engineering and Math principles.” The fair also included James Intrabartolo and Caitlin Riccardi.

Ivory Williams, Special Assistant overseeing Science for Newark Public Schools said, “Congratulations to the entire Oliver Street School family on a successful STEM Fair. Ms. Williams said the projects were thoughtful and solutions based with great attention to detail in solving issues impacting our community.”

Kathy Duke Jackson Assistant Superintendent overseeing Oliver Street School extended congratulations to the administration, teachers and most importantly to students on a job well done. This is the first year Oliver Street School participated in the STEM fair.

Science Park High School Robotics Team Brings Home Another Trophy!


Science Park High School robotics team is proud to bring home the winner trophy for the MAR-Mid-Atlantic robotics Bridgewater championship. This top achievement at this high tech STEM event is a recognition for our teams’ commitment and hard work and for the great job that all Science Park staff members are doing with our students.

Newark High School Student Wins 10th District Congressional App Challenge

Today, Congressman Donald M. Payne, Jr. announced the winner of the 2016 Congressional App Challenge for high school students in New Jersey’s 10th Congressional District. Ayobami Adewale of Bard High School Early College Newark was named the winner for his language-learning app, Learning Chinese.

“The Congressional App Challenge showcases the innovation and technical skills of New Jersey students, and I congratulate Ayobami on winning this year’s competition,” said Payne, according to a statement. “His success is a reminder that we must continue to invest in STEM education to ensure that young people can learn, create, build, and pursue innovative careers that are essential to the economic future of our nation.”

The annual Congressional App Challenge is meant to highlight the value of STEM education by encouraging high schoolers to learn to code by creating their own apps. Competition entries were judged by a local panel based on the quality and implementation of the idea, plus demonstrated excellence of coding skills.

As a winning app, Learning Chinese will be displayed on the Congressional App Challenge website and on a digital display in the U.S. Capitol Building for the next year.

“These are the moments I live for!” This is what one of the amazing Special Needs teachers at Luis Munoz Marin School said today when asked about the experience in her class.

Today the students in Ms. Jiles’ 3rd/4th grade classroom participated in the Hour of Code. These 12 male students eagerly invited Mr. David Huffner, from Code for Newark, into their classroom excited to learn about computer programming. They were able to code for an hour and even forfeited their recess to continue to code. They were so excited to show off their work and helped teach each other in the process.

Barringer Academy of S.T.E.A.M. Students continue to strive!

Panasonic, Inc. of Newark invited Barringer Academy of S.T.E.A.M. students in the Graphic Design and Digital Engineering classrooms to their headquarters in downtown Newark. The collaboration was initiated by VP Manno and coordinated by Mr. Phillips and Ms. Welkis in S.T.E.A.M.’s CTE program. Students received an interactive tour and demonstration Panasonic’s most cutting edge technology designs and products as well as the technology products designed in collaboration with companies like Tesla Motors and Ford Motor Company. Students were able to interact and observe avionics technology, facial recognition software for security use and use by retail stores to analyze customer service, purchasing data and trends, and so much more!

[Newark, NJ – May 27, 2016] – Newark Public Schools (NPS) hosted a STEM event for Pre-Kindergarten students at McKinley School on Friday, May 20 called “Curiosity Unleashed”. During the event, students rotated through several different Science, Technology, Engineering and Math-related (STEM) activities.

“It is so important that we instill a love for learning in our students at a young age, and in this 21st Century economy it is especially important to expose our children to science, technology, engineering and math at a young age,” said Superintendent Christopher Cerf. “Giving our youngest students access to STEM-related events like ‘Curiosity Unleashed’ will help us spark an interest and love for these subjects at an early age, ensuring our students are college and career ready.”

This year marked the first annual Pre-K STEM event, which is designed to inspire Newark’s youngest learners to develop an interest in the STEM fields. NPS and McKinley School plan to continue developing and expanding the Pre-K STEM program in the coming years.
