About Our School
The year, 1838, Nathan Hedges opened the doors to a drafty, old building so that a motley group of boys would receive an education beyond primary school. By conducting the first high school program in the state, and the third to be established in the United States, Mr. Hedges unwittingly became a part of New Jersey history.
Originally labeled Newark High, the school’s name was later changed to Barringer High School.

Pursuant to N.J.S.A. 18A:36-27, The High School Voter Registrations Law requires districts to provide eligible voters registration materials, a summary of voter registration eligibility requirements, materials describing the role of a citizen, and materials articulating the importance of voting to all eligible high school students.

Barringer's JAG Program
Barringer High School’s JAG (Jobs for America’s Graduates) program and Carteret High School collaborated for the first time in JAG history. Both schools worked on leadership skills, teamwork, and networking skills to prepare themselves for the job market.
Recently, New Jersey's Commissioner of Education, Dr. Angelica Allen-McMillan, and her executive staff were invited to tour Barringer High School’s Career & Technical Education (CTE) Programs. Upon Dr. Allen-McMillan’s arrival, she was greeted by Superintendent Roger Leon of the Newark Board of Education and saluted by Barringer's JROTC. The tour included visits to 3 of the 10 CTE programs: Music Technology, Law Studies and Carpentry.
Barringer High School has the most Career & Technical Education programs in the Newark School District. There are 7 onsite: Carpentry, Cybersecurity, JROTC, Law Studies, Music Technology, Public Safety and Jobs for America’s Graduates (JAG). The 3 offsite programs are Aviation in Motion (AIM), Lincoln Tech for automotive training and Solar One for solar panel installation training. Dr. Annette Jones, School to College and Career Coordinator works with students, staff and parents in making important career decisions and directly support the development of career pathways, alignment of the curricula to industry standards and promote CTE student national competitions in SkillsUSA. Mrs. Lucinda Eason, Vice Principal of the CTE programs ensure that all of the CTE programs meets NJDOE standards, engages students in work-based learning opportunities, participates in on-site and off-site internships, job shadowing with industry partners, and that each CTE 3 year program of study offers the CTE students national industry certifications in their CTE major prior to graduation. Mrs. Natasha Pared, Principal was excited to host the visit of the State Commissioner and her executive team.

2022 Law Day Mock Trial Presentation
The 2022 Law Day Mock Trial Presentation was memorable.
Judge Yessenia Warrick presided over the trial of State of NJ vs. Junior N. Nocent.
Newark Prosecutor Damon McDougal, assisted by Jose Campos, argued for the State and head of the Newark Public Defender's Office Rachel Marshall, assisted by Lidia Vargas, represented the Defendant.
Barringer Law students Jose Nunez Romero, Alyssa Del Salto, and Francisco Baez, along with Prof. Catanese served as witnesses for the trial. Twelve Barringer Law students served as the jury and was well attended.
