NEWARK — For their first day of school Thursday, students at John F. Kennedy School were surprised with brand new school supplies for the upcoming year.
More than 150 backpacks stuffed with notebooks, crayons and other essentials were donated to the interdisciplinary special education school in Newark.
The New Jersey Devils and Prudential Center employees — with additional help from the non-profit Pass It Along — helped put a smile on the students’ and teachers’ faces as they handed out the donated gear.
The John F. Kennedy school caters to students aged 10 to 21 who are disabled, medically involved, and autistic.
“Anything that anyone does for this population, for these children, it is always welcoming,” said Principal Glenda Johnson-Green.
All of the backpacks were stuffed by Prudential Center employees. Each bag even included a hand written message in their notebook to help kickoff the school year.
Thousands of pieces of school supplies, such as pencils, notebooks, crayons, index cards and glue sticks, were donated. Additional backpacks and supplies were handed out to the South 17th Street Elementary School in Newark.
“We would like this to become the first of a number of opportunities that we have to work with you and your students,” Jim Leonard, Senior Vice President of Community Investment at New Jersey Devils/Prudential Center, told school officials Thursday. “At the end of the day it’s about them and that’s why we are here.”
Mr. Roberto, a middle school language arts teacher at the school, said he was honored to have the donation for his students.
“We appreciate everything we get,” he said. “It’s a nice little way to start off the year.”

Science Park Baseball team are Champions
Science Park High School baseball team won 2 championships this season. They won the Super Essex Conference Colonial Conference. This was the school’s first conference championship in baseball.
The team was also named Co-champions with East Side High School in the annual NPS Baseball Tournament. Both teams played to a 3-3 tie in a game that was suspended due to lightning and was unable to be made up because of weather and scheduling conflicts. This was the 2nd NPS championship and first since 2009.
The 18-5-1 record was the best in schools history; breaking last year’s school record of 15-11.
Weequahic Boys’ & Girls’ Track Teams win NJSIAA State Sectional Outdoor Track Championships
Congratulations to the boys’ and girls’ track teams at Weequahic High School for capturing the NJSIAA State Sectional Outdoor Track Championships on Saturday May, 24, 2015!
Having both genders from the same school win a state track title is a rarity and has not been accomplished in Newark since the 80’s.
Coaches Kycied Zahir, Eddie Greene and Mahdi Sumter should be commended for their guidance in helping the Indians bring home the title.

Weequahic Girls’ Track Wins First Ever State Relays Title
Congratulations to the Weequahic Girls Indoor Track Team and to head coach Kcyied Zahir on winning the school’s first ever State title in the NJSIAA Group 1 Relays. The victory at the state meet marks the first time a girls team from Newark has won a state relay title since 1997.
The team effort was bolstered by performances from Senior Yaminah Smith’s anchoring of the 4×400 relay team as well as freshman Carla Hines 0.01 second lean-in win over Metuchen in the 4×200 relay.
Capturing the state title follows on the heels of Weequahic winning its second straight Super Essex Conference American Division title in December.
“Everyone has worked so hard for so long for this,” said Zahir, in his 12th year as head coach at Weequahic. “I can’t tell you how much this means to me, the girls, the program and the city of Newark. I am so proud of what these girls did today. They were amazing.”
