NJ Regional Day Unifies Newark!


For 50 years, Special Olympics has been building a movement to break down barriers – both on and off the field in health and education – all through the power of sport. Through the power of their athletes and sports, Special Olympics is ushering in a new world of unity, tolerance, and respect. Just like the Special Olympics New Jersey Regional Day School, JFK, West Side, American History High School, University High School, and North Star who unfortunately could not be here today are unifying Newark. Today marks the day that we unite people of different backgrounds from different schools to inspire action and ultimately end discrimination for people with Intellectual Disabilities. We are the ambassadors of an uprising-peaceful protest in a rebellion against anyone who has a fear of difference.

Our demands are equality, dignity and the recognition of our shared humanity. People of all ages, races, genders, cultures, backgrounds, and abilities continue to face discrimination, ignorance, and disparagement. It is our responsibility to be the leaders that are needed in our community and educate others to take a stance in creating a world of inclusion. We are fighting for a more inclusive world. The Revolution Is Inclusion. I want to take a moment and thank Susan, Kathy and the Special Olympics. Without them our event would not be as big as it is. Also, to Mrs. Mitchell my principal of New Jersey Regional Day School for giving Mr. Garrett and I the freedom and having the confidence in us to create this event. I also want to give a shout out to everyone from NJPAC especially Tom for building confidence in our students’ self-esteem through dance. Shout out to the Montclair Rugby team for taking the time to come and show us what Rugby is all about!

Inclusion is about our ‘abilities’ – our gifts and how to share them. Road Map to College Success

Does Your College Bound Senior Need Financial Aid?

[Newark, NJ – November 28, 2018]  Newark Public School’s Office of Family and Community Engagement will be hosting ROAD MAP TO COLLEGE SUCCESS for parents and students to learn more about college admissions, particularly financial aid. 

The Financial Aid Workshop will be held on Thursday, November 29 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at Central High School.  Dinner is served from 5:30 to 6 p.m. and the workshop is from 6 to 8 p.m.  Central High School is located at 246 18th Avenue, Newark, NJ  07108. 

According to program organizers, families will receive critical information on how to navigate the college experience through various presentations on financial aid, college scholarships, and more.  There will be a student panel, admission officers, and high school counselors who can speak on graduation requirements.

Rhodes Scholar Jordan Thomas Continues To Share His Experiences with Students at Two NPS High Schools

“Newark has Prepared Me Well for My Future”

[NEWARK, NJ – February 12, 2018] Princeton University student Jordan Thomas is sharing his academic and personal experiences with students as a way to inspire Newark Public Schools students to create their own path to success in college and beyond. The 2014 graduate of University High School recently went back to his Alma Mater to talk to students about staying focused in high school, planning their path through college and deciding their future goals, beginning now.

Thomas said, “Your freshman year is as important as your senior year in high school, you have to be serious about your studies from the day you walk into the school until the day you graduate.” Many of the students approached Jordan after the event to get personal recommendations on challenges and opportunities. Principal Edwin Mendez said, “It was an honor to meet with Jordan to discuss his research project for Princeton and to see him engage the students in a way that was informative and interesting to them.”

Thomas also met with more than 50 grammar school age male students at Hawthorne Avenue School. All of the young men are members of the Young Men’s Leadership Academy, established by Principal Henry James. Every week for more than 8 years at Hawthorne, Principal James meets with 6th, 7th and 8th grade male students to discuss challenges in their lives and at school and opportunities for them to soar. Principal James said, “Our neighborhoods need you to come back and help prepare the next generation of leaders which is what Mr. Thomas has done.” Principal James also noted three students who attended Hawthorne are employed at Hawthorne as teaching assistants and mentors to the boys.

Interim Superintendent Gregory said, “I grew up down the street from this school on South 11th. Street. I know what it’s like to be a NPS elementary school student; I am an example of what you can do with the opportunities before you.” He added, “Jordan Thomas is an example of where education and opportunity can take you, as well. As a student, as a person, it is important that you never live just in the moment but plan five years ahead and decide how you can empower yourself through education. My final message is to always believe in yourself and what you have the power to do in your life.”

This was Thomas’ first time speaking to an elementary school. He thanked Assistant Superintendent Roger León for recommending him to speak at Hawthorne Avenue Elementary School. León told the student you can accomplish your goals – whatever they are – but you must first have a plan of action.

In closing, Thomas said, “You must start with a vision of what you want to do and who you want to be in your life. This is the moment – you are powerful, soak up all of the knowledge and wisdom you can as a student. I would not be the person I am today, had I not grown up in Newark. This city has prepared me well for my future.”

NPS High School Students Meet UFC Champions Luke Rockhold and Robbie Lawler

On January 29, wrestling teams from Barringer and Malcolm X Shabazz High Schools received a special invitation to go to Prudential Center and meet UFC Champions Robbie Lawler and Luke Rockhold. In addition, University High School Principal Regina Sharpe and some of her well deserving students were in attendance as well.

In addition to the meet and greet, our students were also able to watch all of the UFC Fighters practice and then they ALL received tickets to Saturday Nights Fight! The athletes message to our kids was beyond fitting. They spoke about discipline, controlling emotions, and dedicating yourself to something that you love and are passion about.
