They knew it was risky, but the courage to be different was well worth it.
Six years ago, about 10 male students at Newark’s Central High School created a tradition that not only set them apart, but changed the social culture at their new school.
Once a week they put on a dress shirt, bow tie or neck tie, slacks and shoes. Some topped the outfit with a blazer, others put on suits or sweaters. Read the full story on nj.com
According to Camden Elementary Principal Samuel Garrison, “The students received the red carpet treatment upon arriving at the Prudential Center.” One of the students remarked that they “felt like stars”. It was an adventure that they had never experienced before. In fact, most of the children had never been inside the Prudential Center before today.
According to NJ Devils President Hugh Weber, “Our goal is to create transformative change in people’s lives through sports and entertainment. We are here to create bonds with the community and with the students. In giving to the kids, we wind up receiving and learning so much from them in return. We’re here to take the mystery out of this building. We are part of the neighborhood and part of the community, and we have the power to make the community better.”
Quite a number of the students at Camden Street Elementary are special needs students. The Devils will be planning activities throughout the year to encourage and engage the students’ social/emotional learning. Members from the Devils organization currently participate in the school’s Adopt-A-Classroom program by reading to students and assisting with the school’s literacy initiatives.
Principal Garrison shared the impact that the interaction with the Devils has on the students, “The hands-on interaction with the players goes a long way in terms of validation. The kids enjoy feeling special. It lets them know that ‘I am somebody.’ It truly helps build their confidence and self-acceptance.” Today’s event was designed specifically for Camden Elementary’s 2nd, 3rd and 4th grade students. Future events are planned for the school’s middle and upper grades.
On Friday, December 5, 2014, Newark Public Schools (NPS) Assistant Superintendent Dr. Peter Turnamian joined Samsung Executive Vice President, Dr. David Steel, United States Senator Cory A. With the bad taste of a last second loss in the sectional final last year still in their mouths, Shabazz returned to the scene of that setback on Saturday and replaced that frustration with jubilation with a heart-pounding 14-6 victory over Dunellen in the NJSIAA/SportsCare Institute North Jersey, Section 2 Group 1 final at Kean University in Union. On Monday, November 24th, Chancellor Avenue Renew School was visited by Councilwoman Mildred Crump and Captain Anthony Tarantino, President of the Newark Fire Officers Union, IAFF Local 1860, with 150 brand new jackets for our students. It was an exciting visit with representatives from the Fire Officers Union distributing new coats to our students. The union teamed up with Operation Warm, a nonprofit dedicated to providing new winter coats to children. We are so grateful that they have approached Chancellor Avenue Renew School with concern and care for keeping our students warm.
Each day, throughout the district, hundreds, of parents are making a difference in our schools, supporting their children’s academic successes by volunteering. The Newark Public Schools Advisory Board wishes to recognize and express its appreciation to those parents and community members who devote their time, share their talents and resources with children, staff and administrators to improve the quality of our schools and the lives of children.

Billie Mills — George Washington Carver School
Mr. Mills is the father of two of George Washington Carver scholars and he supports, encourages and serves as a role model for them. He volunteers his free time and is always willing to go the extra mile, to ensure that they are always striving to achieve excellence. He is a contributing member to the Newark Public Schools and the community, by serving as the lead father of the Concerned Fathers’ Program. He is also a member of our new formed Eagles PTSA here at GWC as well as one of our classroom sponsors.
Elisha Mack — B.R.I.C.K. Peshine Academy
Since 2010, Ms. Mack has been an active parent volunteer at B.R.I.C.K. Peshine Academy. She is always willing to assist in anything that needs to be done when called upon. She is very generous and always donates her time and talent to all school events.
She is the proud parent of 3 scholars. Ms. Mack is an active member of her church, community, and the school parent organization.
Jean Simeon — Ivy Hill School
Mr. Simeon has been active and very helpful at Ivy Hill. He helps with our communication with our French Creole speaking parents by coming in early to translate for us, staying after school to assist with calls to our parents and volunteering during the day with lunch duty. He has also assisted Ivy Hill by being a classroom parent and chaperoning some of our events, The Ivy Hill Community is very grateful for all things that Mr. Simeon does.
