njcomA Century in the Making: New School Building Opens in Newark’s East Ward
By: Jessica Mazzola | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com |Email the author | Follow on Twitter

For the first time in 104 years, there is a new school building in the city’s East Ward. School and city officials gathered Tuesday to open the new Oliver Street School, the second new school building the district opened this year. “The new Oliver Street School building represents a new chapter for the East Ward community’s families, one in which our future workforce will be educated in a modern, state-of-the-art facility,” Newark Mayor Ras Baraka said…The 137,000 square foot building boasts 40 classrooms, a cafeteria, media center, gym, and 21st Century learning equipment, officials said. About 850 students in Kindergarten through 8th grade will attend. The Schools Development Authority paid for Oliver Street’s $73.6 million construction, officials said. District Superintendent Chris Cerf said the new building will “not only be a positive a place for students to learn, but will also be a benefit to the community.” (NJ.com, 06/15/16)

njcomOliver Street School Unveils New Facility

Local elected officials cut the ribbon at a new state of the art public school facility in the city’s East Ward. Oliver Street School received a long awaited $73 million dollar face lift. Mayor Ras Baraka told students that no dollar amount can be put on the price of their education. “This building is only as beautiful as you are,” Baraka said. “The building is great, we’re putting it up, we put everything in it so you can have everything that you need. But the building won’t be remembered unless the people in it do something outstanding. If you do something outstanding, then people will remember the building because you came from Oliver Street School.” School Principal Douglas Petty says it’s a state of the art facility. “I have no doubt that in the 148 years of excellence and tradition that has become the Oliver way, will not only continue, but will afford students with more access and more opportunities to grow and flourish like never before.”…Walter Chambers, a 1945 alumni says he’s happy for the community. “When I was coming up at this age, we didn’t even have television and look what we have today…to hear that the students from pre-kindergarten and on up will have the devices and all just blows my mind, it’s amazing.” (WBGO News, 06/14/16)

Newark Public Schools Welcomes Students, Parents and Teachers to New Oliver Street School

Oliver Street School is the first newly constructed building in the East Ward in 104 years

[Newark, NJ – June 14, 2016] – Mayor Ras J. Baraka and Superintendent Christopher D. Cerf of Newark Public Schools (NPS) joined Principal Douglas J. Petty, Assistant Superintendent Roger León and State Senator M. Teresa Ruiz today in welcoming students, parents and teachers to the grand opening of the new Oliver Street School in Newark. The Schools Development Authority (SDA) invested $73.6 million dollars to build the state-of-the-art school, which is the second newly constructed facility in the school district this year after Elliot Street School was opened in March of 2016.

“The new Oliver Street School building represents a new chapter for the East Ward community’s families, one in which our future workforce will be educated in a modern, state-of-the-art facility,” said Newark Mayor Ras J. Baraka. “There are signs that we are making progress toward a brighter future here in Newark every day. Welcoming Oliver Street families to the first new school in the East Ward in 104 years is just another example of that important progress.”

The new Oliver School building will provide its students with modern, 21st century facilities. Located on the west side of the existing school at 86 Oliver Street, the new school is 137,000 square feet with 40 classrooms and will serve approximately 850 students.

“It is an honor to welcome the parents, students and teachers of Oliver Street School to this beautiful, new facility,” said Superintendent Cerf of NPS. “The students of Oliver Street School will now be able to learn and grow in a state-of-the-art facility that will not only be a positive a place for students to learn, but will also be a benefit to the community— as the first newly constructed school building this neighborhood has welcomed in over a century.”

The new building will also provide access to a separate cafeteria, media center, and gymnasium and will have the added benefit of being the first new school building constructed in the East Ward in 104 years.

“Our students deserve to learn in an inspiring and safe learning environment, and the Oliver Street School community now has a state-of-the-art facility to call their own,” said Senator M. Teresa Ruiz. “By investing in education we are investing in Newark’s future, and I look forward to seeing the positive impact this new building will have on the East Ward and City of Newark.”

The school will continue to serve grades prekindergarten through 8 in the 2016-2017 school year. This new building is part of a long-term facilities plan set by the SDA in partnership with the district.

“I would like to thank the Schools Development Authority, Mayor Baraka, Superintendent Cerf and so many other community leaders for investing in the students and families of Oliver Street School,” said Principal Douglas Petty of Oliver Street School. “As the first new school in the East Ward in over 100 years, I have no doubt that our incredible and resilient children will thrive in their modern, 21st century learning environment.”

“The families of the East Ward and Oliver Street School have been patiently waiting for a new, state-of- the-art school building that will help provide an excellent, 21st century education for our children,” added Roger León, NPS Assistant Superintendent. “I am looking forward to seeing how children’s lives will change for the better in the coming years as they step foot into the first newly constructed building in their neighborhood in over 100 years.”

In addition to the Oliver Street School project, the district is also planning a construction project at South Street School, which is planned for completion in fall of 2018, and recently completed arrangements with a design company.

NPS Announces Opening of Two New State-of-the-Art School Buildings

New Elliott Street and Oliver Street School first newly constructed buildings in district since 2010

[Newark, NJ – November 24, 2015] – Newark Public Schools (NPS) along with the School Development Authority (SDA) is proud to announce the opening of two new state-of-the-art school buildings in 2016 for Newark’s school children. The buildings are a new Elliott Street School and new Oliver Street School, and represent a collective $120 million-dollar investment by the SDA.  Under construction since 2013, these are the first two newly constructed facilities in the school district since the completion of the new Speedway Avenue Elementary School in 2010.

“Thanks to the School Development Authority we are proud to announce the opening of two new state-of-the-art buildings for the Elliott and Oliver Street school communities that will better serve our students,” said Christopher Cerf, Superintendent of NPS. “These modern buildings will create a first-rate educational experience for our city’s school children, allowing them to learn and grow in a 21st century learning environment.”

The new Elliott School building, located at 721 Summer Avenue, will feature brand new facilities, including specialized instruction classrooms, labs and media centers. The new building will be substantially larger than the current Elliott Annex with 138,000 square feet, 40 classrooms and will be capable of serving approximately 850 students in grades PK through 8. In addition, the building has a separate cafeteria, gym, and multi-purpose room with a stage. A time-lapse video of the new facility being built can be found here.

“Elliott School parents, students and teachers could not be more excited about this new facility,” said Roger León, NPS Assistant Superintendent. “For several years, our community has been having conversations about how to best utilize a new building for our kids, and it is very gratifying to finally see it come to fruition.”

The new Oliver School building, similar to Elliott School, will provide its students with state-of-the-art services. Located at on the west side of the existing school at 86 Oliver Street. it will be 137,000 square feet with 40 classrooms and will be capable of serving around 850 students. This building will also provide access to a separate cafeteria, media center, and gymnasium and will have the added benefit of being the first new school building constructed in the East Ward in 104 years. A slideshow with images of the new facility can be found here.

“Our community eagerly awaits the completion of this new, modern building,” said Douglas Petty, principal of the Oliver Street School. “Our students will soon have access to a high-tech facility that will enhance the educational environment in all of their classrooms and make them ever prouder to be at our school.”

These two buildings are the culmination of years of extensive planning and collaboration by school community leaders. These buildings represent a new standard for facilities in the district that NPS leaders hope to build upon in coming years.

In addition to these two projects, the district is also planning a construction project at South St. School, which is planned for completion in fall of 2018, and recently completed arrangements with a design company.
