Big Picture and PSE&G sponsored Barringer S.T.E.A.M.’s first STEAM Think Tank on February 15th. There were over 40 guests in attendance. We had representation from Rutgers, Clara Maass Hospital, Mars-Wrigley, Greater Newark Conservancy, The Newark STEAM Coalition, our Alumni Association and more. We also had leadership representation from Central Office. Deputy Executive Director from the Office of Bilingual Education Rebecca Odessey, Special Assistants Margaret El (Arts Department), Chamiris Mantrana (C.T.E.) and Ivory Williams (Science) were in attendance. Honestly, we did not know what to expect. However, they say “If you build it, they will come.” Our community stakeholders definitely showed up and more importantly, they genuinely want to help be a part of the change that we are trying to effect. In fact, as a result of our newly formed collaboration with Rutgers, RU has agreed to host the next event at the college on Thursday, May 17th.

As an eighth grader, Ronaldo Espinal remembers watching a struggling Shabazz team getting 10-run ruled on a consistent basis. Now as a senior, Espinal has been a crucial piece in the program’s turnaround and helped bring the Newark public school its most successful season to date.
Shabazz won the Independence Division title, the program’s first divisional championship. It went 12-1 against divisional opponents and finished the regular season with a 17-9 record. Shabazz also advanced to the second round of the 85th Greater Newark Tournament, which is the furthest the program has made it.
“It was really important,” Espinal said. “In the summertime, I play for teams with kids from Barringer and Bloomfield Tech, but they always looked down on me just because of the fact that I played for Shabazz. Now we are on the same level.”
The program has blossomed under Shabazz coach Ryan Cordero, assistant coach Dan Barcia and former assistant coach Kevin Arroyo. For Cordero, who is a social studies teacher at the school and has been with the program the past eight years, seeing Shabazz reach this milestone is a testament of all the hard work that his staff and players put in through the years.
“There was a lot of hard work that came in this program,” he said. “It comes down to the kids first and foremost. We have to believe in them. At the end, they believe in you too and start to earn your respect as crazy as things may get.”
Most of Cordero’s seniors have been on the varsity squad for the past three years. In a neighborhood where baseball isn’t the dominate sport, fielding a quality team is no easy task.
“In the South Ward, there’s a good baseball player that’s in the streets or doesn’t make it to his 12th grade year because he’ll drop out or just doesn’t want to play baseball anymore,” Espinal said. “Every year, the rate of baseball players in the South Ward goes down. For us to gather enough players that are talented and take the conference that’s good enough for me.”
Making fielding a team even more difficult is the fact that Shabazz isn’t know for its baseball program. Instead it is a football and basketball school. It’s women’s basketball program flourished under legendary coach Vanessa Watson and its football team advanced to the North 2, Group 1 final this past year.
Getting its baseball program on the map is something that Shabazz alum Odanis Rodriguez, who graduated in 2012, is very proud of.
“This program has come a long, long way,” Rodriguez said. “I give a lot of props to coach Cordero. He brought this team from nothing. We were always on a losing streak and always in a slump. He made it happen with this team. They look really good. It’s a different ball game they’re playing now.”
Sparking this season’s success has been Espinal, Al Shakir Evans, Genaro Falcon, Ashad Garat, Shamont Mercer, Lamont Oliver and Tahji Smith.
Shabazz hopes to continue look good when the state tournament gets under. Shabazz received the fifth seed in the North 2, Group 1 tournament and will host 12th-seeded Weehawken in the first round on Monday.

Barringer’s (Newark, N.J.) Zamar Wise solidified himself as one of New Jersey’s top quarterbacks in the 2019 class as he earned MVP honors Sunday at the National Underclassmen Combine’s 3 Kings Quarterback Camp and Competition – East Coast. Held at Parsippany high school, the camp featured some of the top quarterback talent throughout the region, putting them through various drills and competitions for upwards of five hours — as the camp spanned from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Following the camp, NJ.com caught up with NUC founder, president and CEO Dave Schuman for a breakdown of Wise, whom he considers the top quarterback at his event.
“He’s got a great arm. He’s unbelievably accurate,” Schuman said. “When that ball comes out it slides out of his hand and it’s on target. The last half of the day is a lot of competition. We do like five different drill sets that they compete in. And I think he was top three in four of the five drills. And he was No. 1 in both accuracy drills. So he was really good. He gets the ball there with great velocity. He’s athletic, he’s got nice size (measured 6-3, 182).”
Schuman also raved of Wise’s coach-ability and knack for making corrections on the go.
“He really takes to coaching well, too,” Schuman said. “As you’re going through it and you’re showing him things that he can work on to get better, he really kind of takes to that and continues to improve. So I thought he was just really really a guy completely under-served in the recruiting space. I don’t know his academic situation or anything like that, but as far as his ability he is no doubt a scholarship quarterback. If he’s not at the highest of highest levels, which he might be, he’s definitely a division 1 level guy.”
Schuman is as impressed with Wise as any sophomore quarterback he’s seen this year. And a lot of that has to do with his poise, despite not attending many camps in the past.
“I just think he’s got a great way about him. He’s calm, he’s cool, he’s collected and he just approaches things really well. But I wasn’t surprised. When he came in there, he looked the part of a Division 1 quarterback,” said Schuman. “And there were some really good quarterbacks there, too. But as he started to feel his way through, it was really cool to see somebody generate that confidence as he’s realizing, hey, I could end up being the top guy. And as he started going through it, he just got better and better because of that.”
Wise is a pro-style quarterback who can also run, coming off of an explosive sophomore campaign where he generated 1,489 passing yards and 15 TDs (to only five INTs) on 62 percent passing, and 540 rushing yards with five additional scores on 61 carries. He also converted six two-point conversion attempts.
Already a two-year starter, Wise had just as explosive a season as a freshman in 2015, throwing for 1,898 passing yards and 18 TDs (to only six INTs) to go along with 119 rushing yards and two additional scores. Wise trains throughout the off-season at the Lucien Pass Academy and plans to continue to prove his worth competing at camps this summer.
Although he has yet to field his first offer, he’s being recruited by Rutgers, Penn State, Pitt, Virginia Tech, Temple and a number of other Power 5 schools throughout the region.
Notre Dame could potentially get in on the action as defensive coordinator Mike Elko is expected to visit Barringer this week to inquire more about Wise, who has also received camp invites from Florida State and Clemson.

The 37-year drought is over.
Fifth-seeded Barringer withstood a 20-point third quarter from second-seeded Chatham, and then outlasted the Morris County champion in overtime to emerge from the NJSIAA/ShopRite North Jersey, Section 2, Group 3 final at Chatham High School with a 56-53 win for the program’s first sectional title in close to four decades!
The 4th quarter started with Chatham leading 40-35 after outscoring Barringer 20-10 in that 3rd quarter. The lead almost evaporated in the first few minutes of the 4th with James McNeil scoring 4 points to start the quarter.
“Fourth quarter I had to step up and score the team some buckets,” McNeil said. “I’m a senior on this team and I didn’t want to go home.”
McNeil led Barringer with 19 points and Sadiq Griggs helped run the Barringer offense with a game-high seven assists.
