Girls Who Code Summer Immersion Program

girls who code

This summer two incoming Newark Board of Education seniors completed the Girls Who Code Summer Immersion Program. This program helped these young women learn computer science skills that will help them make an impact on their community while learning about a wide variety of career opportunities in technology. This program also allows these students to learn networking skills and be exposed to real world work experiences.

Congratulations to Jaya Byfield from Bard Early College High School and Muqtadira Alli from Science Park High School for their participation this summer.

NPS Takes On The Ivy Leagues

Congratulations are in order as Janic Aguirre of Bard Early College High School, has been accepted into 7 of the 8 Ivy Leagues and waitlisted for the remaining one. These acceptances include: Harvard, Princeton, Yale, University of Pennsylvania, Dartmouth, Cornell, and Columbia – with Brown as a possibility. When asked what considerations he made when applying to every school, he replied “ I kind of took the YOLO (You Only Live Once) approach, I thought this will be the only time I apply to college so why not?”

When asked what words he would use to describe himself, Janic replied “Some of my classmates call me quirky, and helpful, and curious.”. At 17 years old, Aguirre’s curiosity has lead him to learn more about the world around him than most kids his age. He recognizes that he has a strong sense of intellectual curiosity and loves to pursue subjects and spend his time reading more about them. It is due to this, that he’s gone from wanting a career in astrophysics, computer science, law and currently Mayan epigraphy which he intends to pursue after studying Anthropology & Linguistics at the Ivy League of his choosing.

The word “curious” came about twice when the same question was asked of his professor, Dr. Joanne Baron and Principal of Bard Early College High School, Dr. Carla Stephens. Dr. Joanne Baron stated “Janic is one of those people who just really seems to excel at everything he does. My colleagues and I actually had a bit of a competition to see who could get Janic interested in their specialty – and I feel like I won that competition.” It is thanks to Dr. Baron and her course on Ancient Mayan writing, that Janic has landed at his current interest of Mayan epigraphy. Through Bard’s Early College program, students are encouraged to explore their curiosities and take electives and classes of their interests with hopes to steer them in the direction of their future career goals, if not at least assist in deciding their major in college. The objective, is to offer collegiate services and experiences without putting kids into the debt that typically correlates to going to college.

Being a first-generation college student who typically would have to navigate the stress of figuring out tuition, Aguirre assures that his future at an Ivy League is secure because of the assistance he’s been offered in Financial Aid. This serves as yet another nod to Bard’s assistance in prepping future scholars for their own greatness.

Coming from a family of Japanese and Nicaraguan descent, Aguirre who speaks fluent Japanese is currently constructing his own language – with up to 300 words done so far. Dr. Carla Stephens, who serves as Principal to Aguirre notes “Janic is always in pursuit of ways to feed his passion for knowledge, I am proud and excited for him to arrive at his next “place to think” and to continue nourishing his greatness. I can hardly wait to see the mark that he leaves on this world.”. The phrase “place to think” is the motto for Bard Early College High School, serving as a reminder and reinforcing the notion that students have the freedom to explore their interests and build knowledge within their schools walls.

With educators like Dr. Baron who are invested in and encourage the advancement of their students, along with Principals like Dr. Carla Stephens, Aguirre is one of a few in this generation of Newark Public School graduates headed to the Ivy Leagues. Joining Science Park High School’s Azeez Richardson, who got accepted to Harvard and Temitayo Ojo of Central High School who got accepted to Dartmouth - The Newark Board of Education and Newark Public Schools community alike couldn’t be any prouder of Janic Aguirre and his fellow peers. It is with the utmost pride that we have our scholars join the ranks as game-changers and future leaders within our society.

This high school student is helping out to better her community

NEWARK — It’s early Saturday morning and 16-year-old Asada Rashidi looks down Bergen Street and smiles.

There’s no more cigarette butts, soda cans or broken glass scattered on the sidewalk. She grips her small broom with her purple gloves and moves on, past the bus stop and mini market to continue sweeping her neighborhood.

Newark High School Student Contributes to a Cleaner Community

By: Vince Baglivo | BrickCityLive
Cleaner Community Brick City Live - Bard

On a recent snowy Saturday morning, while many of her high school peers were still asleep in their warm beds, Asada Rashidi was hard at work keeping the streets in her South Ward neighborhood clean and crosswalks clear for pedestrians.

Asada, a junior at Newark’s Bard Early College High School, is the first volunteer member of the Bergen-Lyons-Clinton Partnership (BLCSID) Clean Team Ambassadors. And the organization’s board members and professional staff, along with local residents, business and property owners, couldn’t be more pleased with her effort and commitment.

Known locally as the South Ward Special Improvement District (SID), the BLCSID was established to help the area compete, improve and sustain commercial viability. A public/private partnership between the City of Newark, local business and commercial property owners and residents focused on generating economic activity and community development, the SID moved forward in 2016 with an aggressive streetscape maintenance program that is transforming the streetscape, including vacant lots and properties in need of extra attention.

Chris Bernardo, principal of Commercial District Services (CDS), the company that oversees the hiring, training, scheduling and work of the Clean Team Ambassadors, said he was pleased to partner with Newark Beth Israel Medical Center and the BLCSID to establish the program. Like all members of the Clean Team Ambassadors, Asada is a resident of Newark and the South Ward.

“Asada is applying the same hard work and focus that she brings to her academics to her commitment to serving her neighbors,” Bernardo stated. “Special thanks to supervisor Jerry Blankman and team leader Quanika Joseph for their guidance and support as mentors for Asada.”

The Clean Team Ambassadors have been gathering more than 240 bags of garbage and removing 25-50 graffiti tags, stickers and posters on a weekly basis as part of the supplemental streetscape services the South Ward SID funds in support of the City of Newark’s Department of Sanitation.

“The Clean Team Ambassadors we have hired with the help of the job placement programs provided by the City of Newark and Beth Israel Medical Center are making a difference in their own community, contributing to a better quality of life for their families, friends and neighbors while learning valuable job skills and earning a paycheck,” Bernardo added.

“I’m proud of her desire to help keep our community clean,” said Asada’s mother, Atiya Jaha-Rashidi, Director of Special Projects at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center & Children’s Hospital of NJ, and the BLCSID’s Second Vice President. “She proactively sought this opportunity to be the Clean Team Ambassador’s first volunteer, and she is always eager to help out.”

When asked about her volunteerism, Asada said she has enjoyed her experience and looks forward to making more contributions. I love it; it’s cool to help set an example by cleaning up the streets in your own neighborhood.”

“A clean, safe and welcoming community is the standard we are committed to on behalf of the people who live, work, shop, dine, invest and worship in the South Ward, and the people who visit our neighborhood and Newark,” concluded Ronice Bruce, the SID’s Executive Director. “Asada, and all of our Clean Team Ambassadors, are now recognized and welcomed in their community for the work they are doing that we believe will contribute to the South Ward becoming the ward of choice in our city.”

A complete schedule showing where the Clean Team Ambassadors are working in the district on a weekly basis can be found at www.southwardsid.com, along with more information about programs, services and opportunities to support and contribute to the initiatives of the South Ward SID. You can also follow news from the South Ward SID through social media at Facebook.com/SouthWardSID.
