On June 16, 2017, eight teacher-leaders developed and delivered Professional Development sessions on the district’s big investments at the NPS District-Wide High School Math Conference.

Four NPS High Schools Nationally Recognized

For the first time in the history, 4 Newark Public Schools high schools received a Silver Medal in the U.S News/World Reports Best High Schools in America (2015). In addition to Science Park High School(#32), American History High School(#51), Technology High School(#53) and University High School(#56) being Nationally Ranked, Arts High School and Bard Early College High School received Bronze Medal recognition.

Schools that receive Silver Medals are ranked in the top 15% of schools in the country and state. Schools that receive Bronze medals aren’t nationally ranked, generally, because of their College Readiness indicator, which in essence is based on Advanced Placement participation and passing rates.

Science Park High School Teams Win Calculus and Statistics Contests in 2014 NPS Math Olympics

ScienceParkMathOlympicsApril2014Newark Public Schools high school math students again pitted their skills against each other in this year’s Calculus and Statistics competitions, which are the first events of the district’s annual Math Olympics. Science Park High School students scored highest in both contests, taking home the trophy as well as medals and electronic calculators.In the Calculus event, East Side was second and University third. Bard came in second in the Statistics event. Other participating schools were American History, Arts, Central and Technology.

The aim of the district’s Math Olympics is to inspire students to improve their math knowledge and skills while competing against their peers. The Math Olympics, which is organized by the Newark Association of Math Educators (NAME) in collaboration with other teachers, continues in the next few weeks with students in younger grades competing.

Students to Participate in Voyages on the Black Atlantic Music Adventure

Chad School Foundation Joins Newark Public Schools to Support Event Featuring Famous Musicians

Newark, NJ, January 6, 2014 – Newark Public Schools and the Chad School Foundation will join together on Monday, January 13 from 12:45 p.m.- 2:15 p.m. for a special event, titled Voyages on the Black Atlantic, which will take place at Science Park High School, 260Norfolk Street, Newark, NJ 07102.

More than 500 students from American History High School, Arts High School and Science Park High School will participate in a music history lesson that will take them from Africa to Rio de Janeiro, New Orleans and Havana.  They will follow the trail of the Tresillo, a three-note West African rhythm that can be found in modern music and at Mardi Gras events.  Demonstrating the musical journey will be Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award recipient,Rock Hall of Fame inductee and Allman Brothers band co-founder Jaimoe, along with his Jasssz Band,which includes two Blues Hall of Fame members, and musicians and singers from Brazil and New Orleans.  Student musicians will participate in the grand finale of the event, which is curated by musician Paul Lieberman.

Chad School Foundation Executive Director Reginald Lewis said of sponsoring the event, “Voyages onthe Black Atlantic is a rare cultural and music education opportunity for Newark students.  So many of our young people are unaware of the enormous influence of African rhythms found in music genres around the world.We are very pleased to sponsor this program.”
