The state-of-the-art facility at Malcolm X Shabazz High School was built by the collective efforts of CTS Design Group, Suburban Consulting Engineers, Inc., and the Land-Tek Group who partnered with the Newark Public Schools’ Office of Facilities, Department of Health & Physical Education, as well as school-based and central office staff.

"This grant from the New York Giants through the NFL Foundation Grassroots Program will provide endless opportunities for our students to learn, grow, and thrive through athletics and recreation. The stadium and field have always been a staple in our community; receiving brand-new turf will make a difference like no other. I am deeply grateful for this investment into our community and our young people," said Superintendent León.

“I continue to stand in awe at the accomplishments of this school and our district. While the work we do in every school is important to me, this project in the South Ward, where I was born gives me great joy,” said President Council.

“We are thrilled that our longstanding partnership with the NFL Foundation and LISC has continued to create long-lasting change through the Grassroots Program”, said Allison Stangeby, Vice President of Community Relations for the New York Giants. “This grant has helped to support the construction of the new playing surface at Shabazz Stadium which will provide more athletic opportunities for our Newark community.”

“Greater Newark LISC is proud of our joint efforts with the NFL Foundation and the Giants to provide an improved recreational experience for young people in the Newark community. We are committed to supporting opportunities that will foster positive changes in young lives,” said Judith Thompson-Morris, Deputy Executive Director of Greater Newark LISC.

Enrollment Continues to Increase in Newark Public Schools

[Newark, NJ] Newark Public Schools continues to experience a substantial increase in student enrollment for over the past 5 years, inclusive of this school year. The latest enrollment figures indicate a positive trend in diversification and overall growth in student population.

Last year’s iteration of Newark Enrolls resulted in the highest increase in student enrollment, with over one thousand additional students added to the district’s roster for this school year. While public school enrollment has experienced a downward trend throughout the country, Newark Public Schools is distinguished by having the 5th largest increase in enrollment among the nation’s largest public-school systems.

There are signs that the upcoming enrollment cycle for next school year is on the same path. The District continues to experience impressive growth. Within hours of the Newark Enrolls application launch following the All Schools Fair on November 4, nearly twenty-five hundred applications were submitted. This is higher than any other year following the window opening.

"We are excited to see our student population grow and diversify," said Superintendent Leὀn. "These numbers represent our commitment to providing a welcoming and inclusive District for students. We look forward to the unique contributions each of our students will make to the city of Newark and beyond,” he added.

Board President Council shared in the excitement, “Our enrollment is growing, which is an indication that the District is headed in the right direction. We are offering families more choices and they are taking advantage as evidence by our increase in enrollment”.

Newark Public Schools remains dedicated to fostering an environment that celebrates diversity and inclusivity while providing a high-quality education for all. The increase in student enrollment is a testament to the mission to empower students for success in a rapidly changing world.

Newark Public Schools Announces Entrepreneurial Success in National Business Plan Competition

Students of South 17th Street and West Side High Schools along Principals Allen & Cook, Superintendent Leὀn, and staff
Students of South 17th Street and West Side High Schools along Principals Allen & Cook, Superintendent Leὀn, and staff

[Newark, New Jersey] This year marked a significant milestone for South 17th Street School and West Side High School students as they competed in the Annual Youth Business Plan Challenge, an entrepreneurial competition sponsored by Young Entrepreneurz Solutions (YES) in St. Croix, US Virgin Islands.

Founded by former Rutgers University award-winning adjunct professor and veteran entrepreneur Ernest Ruffin, Jr, YES's mission is to teach youth in grades 6 -12 from across the nation, the Virgin Islands, and Europe business and economic development to help them start or grow their businesses.

The organization specializes in teaching middle and high school-aged youth the foundation of entrepreneurship and economic development. Ruffin intends to give young people in underserved communities the tools to succeed in business and create economic opportunities for themselves and their communities.

Superintendent Leόn was thrilled, “I experienced immeasurable pride as I witnessed the brilliance of the students from South 17th Street and West Side High Schools. It was great to see how they incorporated everything they are learning into a stellar performance at the YES National Business Plan Challenge. A true example of where Passion Meets Progress,” he added.

South 17th Street School 8th graders, Luince Rahman, Maurice Sharpe, and Kaneisha Marable, made a notable debut, standing out as one of only two groups featuring students in middle school grades. Their involvement in the competition not only showcased exceptional talent but also served as an inspiring introduction to the world of entrepreneurship. The excitement and motivation generated by their participation were palpable, offering them a glimpse of what's possible as they observed their West Side High upper-classmen progress through the competition. The event proved to be a valuable experience, fostering a sense of aspiration and achievement among the budding entrepreneurs of Newark.

Competing against students from California, Michigan, New York, St. Thomas, and Wisconsin, West Side High School seniors, Hapsatou Fatty, Alyssa Lopez, and Shamar Richards took home the coveted 1st Place prize. Their presentation focused on Rider Heat Hot Sauce. The students worked on their business pitches in their entrepreneurial class, which played a pivotal role in their success, along with the Newark Beth Israel Farmers Market partnership for marketing and sales. They were evaluated on their business plan, creativity, presentation, financials, taste, and overall presentation delivery.

Principal Cook expressed immense pride, stating, "There is no better feeling than seeing your students competing with others from all over the world and winning!"

The success of West Side High School students was attributed to their well-structured presentation, showcasing media coverage, and real community partnerships with local businesses. Their ability to enhance and scale the "Hot Sauce" business demonstrated the practical application of entrepreneurial skills learned in the classroom.

“We continue to provide our students the opportunity to perform on the world stage and they keep impressing us on their full potential,” said President Council.

Over 450 people attend the Annual Title I Parent Conference

[Newark, NJ] On Wednesday, November 8 the Newark Public Schools’ 37th Annual Title I Parent Conference, themed Brand New Day, began with warm welcoming remarks from Director Michelina Thornton, Board President Hasani Council, and Superintendent León. The event featured keynote speaker Mr. Robert Jackson, a professional athlete, renowned author, parent, and educator, who shared inspiring words with the attendees.

Hundreds of parents and guardians from throughout the District, joined by the parent liaison from each school, attended a diverse range of workshops and roundtable discussions led by esteemed experts. Topics included college exploration, estate planning, civic engagement, social-emotional and mental health, navigating the digital world, and strategies for turning reluctant readers into enthusiastic bookworms. In addition to the workshops, numerous organizational partners set up informational tables, giving parents access to valuable resources from nearly 40 partner organizations and several district departments.

Superintendent León emphasized the significance of celebrating parents, acknowledging their resourcefulness and declaring the day as a time to be "selfish" in recognizing their contributions. He reiterated the District's commitment to recognizing the important impact of parents and guardians in the educational process, with the Annual Title I Parent Conference being just one way we recognize that importance.

Board President Council expressed gratitude to parents, guardians, and caregivers for their essential role in ensuring that students are present, focused, and ready to learn. The sentiment was echoed by Ms. Ingram, a mother with children attending West Side High School and Belmont Runyon School, who enthusiastically praised the conference for providing parents with valuable sources of information.  According to Ms. Ingram, the event contributes to the growth and development of children by offering parents insights and tools to support their educational journey.
