New Jersey Makes Financial Aid Applications a Graduation Requirement with the Newark Public Schools Leading the Way

[Newark, NJ] Superintendent Leὀn and the Newark Board of Education applaud Governor Murphy and the Sponsors of Bill A1181/S2054 requiring high school students to complete financial aid applications.

In Newark, the Board of Education proactively shaped the future of its students by instituting a pivotal policy change in 2022. Beginning with that graduating class and onwards, seniors in the Newark Public Schools became the first to be required to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or the NJ Alternative Financial Aid Application (NJAFAA) as a graduation requirement.

As such, the enthusiasm within the District was palpable with the passage of Bill A1181/S2054, which mandates the completion of a financial aid application form for seniors across high schools throughout the state.

Superintendent Leὀn stated, “the significance of financial aid applications, recognizing the gateway they provide to numerous opportunities for students seeking financial support in their post-secondary education.” He emphasized, "Our goal is to ensure that every student is well-informed about the resources available to them for their educational journey and to learn first-hand that college is accessible to every child regardless of zip code or family income.”

Board President Council, acknowledging the benefits of completing financial aid applications, expressed excitement about the District's support for students and families, stated, “the offering of workshops to families reflects the commitment to ensuring accessibility and understanding of the process.”

The Newark Board of Education, and now the rest of the state of New Jersey, have taken a bold and forward-thinking step towards shaping a brighter future for its students with the implementation of this graduation requirement. They are fostering financial literacy, but also opening doors to educational opportunities.

Superintendent León acknowledges Chancellor Nancy Cantor from Rutgers-Newark, Dr. Charles Payne from the Cornwall Institute, Robyn Ince from the Newark City of Learning Collaborative, college partners, the district’s Office of Student Life, high school principals, school counselors, mentors, staff, parents, and students for their commitment to post-secondary success and outcomes.

Newark’s Future Chefs Begin Their Culinary Journey in Prekindergarten

pre-k-camden-newark-vo-2024 - 17

[Newark, NJ] In December, Pre-Kindergarten students from Camden Street Elementary School embarked on an inspiring culinary journey as they stepped into Newark Vocational High School for the district’s inaugural B4K (Before Kindergarten) Initiative Future Chefs hands-on cooking session. Future Chefs not only introduces these budding chefs to the art of cooking, but also fosters a holistic understanding of how culinary skills intertwine with literacy, writing, math, and science, setting the stage for a flavorful and educational experience.

As the prekindergarten students and their families arrived, they were greeted with a heartfelt reception orchestrated by Newark Vocational High School hospitality students. Principal Karisa DeSantis and her staff added a touch of culinary delight by serving refreshments. The gathering comprised not only Principal DeSantis and her team, but also Camden Street Elementary School Principal Samuel Garrison and staff, along with members of the Office of Early Childhood. Together, they curated an inviting ambiance, exemplifying the collaborative spirit that defined this special event.

The event kicked off with a tour of the state-of-the-art kitchen at Newark Vocational High School, where culinary students practice their skills and gain hands-on experience. The kitchen is designed like a modern restaurant, allowing hospitality students to serve the entire school community at different times of the day. Additionally, their "guests" witness meals being prepared through the large glass dividers separating the kitchen and seating area. The three and four-year-old Future Chefs and their families were in awe of the facilities.

Following the tour, the students were given tools of the culinary trade: an apron, cookie cutters, and recipe books, setting the stage for their hands-on cooking experience. Culinary Arts teacher Chef Heffner and his staff assisted them in making Rolled Vanilla Sugar Cookies. Chef Heffner described each ingredient as he placed them into the mixer, and the students were provided with rolled-out sheets of dough to cut out their cookies using their cookie cutters. They topped the cookies off with flavorful colored sugar before popping them into the oven to bake.

As the aroma of baking cookies filled the air, two volunteer students led an engaging read-aloud session to immerse the prekindergarten students in the culinary experience. The culmination of this culinary journey was met with pure joy as the freshly baked cookies emerged, bringing smiles to the faces of the young chefs. These delectable treats were carefully placed in a gift box, a heartfelt token prepared by Chef Heffner and his talented culinary students, expressing gratitude and saying 'Thank you!' for the shared moments.

"Our commitment to delivering a well-rounded education extends to providing access to impactful programs like Future Chefs. This initiative illustrates our ongoing efforts to give students the indispensable tools they need to thrive in life, starting from the foundational Pre-K level, stated Superintendent León."

"We were thrilled to have launched Future Chefs and welcomed the prekindergarten students from Camden Street Elementary School to our school," said Principal Karisa DeSantis. "Cooking is an important part of literacy, math, and science, and we're excited to be able to share our knowledge and skills with Newark's youngest learners."

Board President Hasani Council also weighed in, stating, "We believe that the B4K Initiative will help to build stronger connections between our elementary and high schools, and we're grateful to the culinary staff at Newark Vocational High School for their support and dedication to our students."

Future Chefs at Newark Vocational, is an integral component of the overarching B4K strategy, purposefully connecting Newark's prekindergarten students in elementary schools with their future high school counterparts. Thus far, the youngest learners in Newark have engaged in diverse experiences such as ballet at Arts High School, robotics at Newark School of Data Science & Technology, swimming at Science Park, and now cooking at Newark Vocational. As part of the ongoing commitment to enrichment, they are actively planning to broaden the spectrum of offerings to include sports in the near future.

Newark Public Schools and Aurway Present: Life Through My Eyes

LifeThroughMyEyes-inside

[Newark, NJ] Life Through My Eyes is an integral component of the Aurway Repertory Theatre’s Dear Life Project, a poignant initiative centered around mental health and suicide prevention. This one-act coming-of-age play seamlessly weaves together the elements of a traditional play with the power of music and monologues, offering an insightful exploration of life through the lens of a young Black boy.

The play serves a dual purpose: not only does it shed light on the intricacies of mental health, depression, and anxiety, but it also equips students with valuable tools to navigate these challenges. Following the compelling performance, attendees actively engaged in a candid talk-back session, creating an open dialogue on the themes presented. To further enhance this reflective experience, each participant receives a personalized journal, encouraging them to capture their thoughts and insights during the discussion. This immersive approach not only raises awareness but fosters a community committed to understanding and addressing mental health issues.

Superintendent León shared the importance of providing a creative way to address the needs of students and staff, “Aurway’s performance was masterful. It allowed us to address sensitive issues with empathy and understanding,” he stated.

“We value all of our students,” said Board President Council, “and today is a perfect example of our collective efforts to do just that.”

“To have the privilege of sharing this artistic journey in the place I proudly call home adds a profound layer of satisfaction. Moreover, the ability to impart this creative experience with students in our shared community enhances the fulfillment even further,” said Lawrence Dandridge, Arts High School alumnus and author of the play.

Newark School of Fashion & Design High School Students Collaborate to Design Custom Cleats for the New York Jets’ Garret Wilson

nsfd-cleats-nyj-garrett-wilson-2023 - 21

[Newark, NJ] Students from the Newark School of Fashion & Design (NSFD) recently embarked on an extraordinary journey as they were granted a rare opportunity to design custom football cleats for New York Jets star wide receiver Garrett Wilson. This exclusive collaboration unfolded through a strategic partnership between the New York Jets and Microsoft Surface, with the aim of not only fostering creativity but also spotlighting the exceptional talents of the budding designers at the Newark School of Fashion & Design.

The initiative kicked off on Friday, October 27th, 2023, with a generous donation of Microsoft Surface devices to the NSFD, serving as the catalyst for an inspiring design process. This collaboration not only provided the students with hands-on experience, but also served as a platform for them to exhibit the design skills and innovation being learned in their coursework, such as The Art of Shoemaking and Customization conducted in partnership with Dirty Soles Footwear Group. At the conclusion of the project, students were tasked with crafting designs that embodied the essence of NSFD which were then shared with New York Jets shoe designers to assist in manufacturing the final product.

Superintendent León conveyed his gratitude, stating, "We extend our appreciation to our community partners for their steadfast support and enthusiasm in preparing our students for such valuable opportunities. The collaboration between the Newark School of Fashion & Design, Dirty Soles Footwear Group, and the New York Jets stands as an exemplary model for the collaborative partnerships we aim to cultivate throughout our district."

On November 28, the participating group of NSFD students arrived at the New York Jets Training Center in Florham Park, New Jersey. The visit unfolded as an immersive experience, featuring an exciting cleat reveal. To add to the thrill, Garrett Wilson made a surprise appearance, gifting each student their own personal Microsoft Surface to take home.

Principal Pitts commented on the opportunity, "Accelerated learning at Newark School of Fashion & Design has been a key focus, and we are ecstatic that our students can amplify their skillset through hands-on design projects like this one in partnership with the New York Jets and Microsoft Surface."

Wilson was set to showcase his custom cleats during the New York Jets home game against the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday, December 3. Among the spectators at MetLife Stadium were participating students, NSFD staff, and the founders of Dirty Soles Footwear Group.

Assistant Superintendent of High Schools Dr. Ortiz commented, “It's impressive to see the high level of creativity, technical expertise, and design proficiency the students demonstrated in their work for the New York Jets. This is a true testament to the exceptional quality of the NSFD staff, the District, and its students.”

Board President Council stated, “The Newark School of Fashion & Design not only provides its students with the necessary skills to succeed in the fashion industry and beyond, but also valuable opportunities to work with renowned organizations such as the New York Jets. This is a testament to the exceptional work of The Newark Board of Education in empowering and preparing our students."

Through this unique project, the intersection of sports, fashion, and technology converged to create an unforgettable learning experience for the students involved.
