New Book ‘We Were Strangers Once, Too’ Showcases Migrant Voices, Offers Rare, First-Hand Insight Into Immigrant Journey and Experience

NEWARK, NJ -  Newark Public Schools announces a first-of-its kind collaborative project in American educational history, the publication of “We Were Strangers Once, Too,” a collection of 58 student stories centered around themes of immigration and identity, available today on Amazon.com. The book is a necessary read and an empathetic balm in a polarized world.

“I’m inspired by the extraordinary Newark students who shared their stories of immigration with courage and vulnerability,” shared Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ). “Each journey reflects a conspiracy of love—loved ones and countless others seen and unseen propelling them towards a better future—and each journey speaks to the strength, beauty, and enduring promise of this great city.”

Each individual story showcases a first-person account of the journey to the United States or an immigration experience from one of our most vulnerable voices, representing 24 countries, 5 continents, and told in over a dozen unique languages. These narratives provide a window into all aspects of life as an immigrant child in America, including a breathtaking series of individual stories that combine to take readers the complete way from South America to the border, through jungles and over rivers and under cover of night as gang members and police make hot pursuit.

“In 'We Were Strangers Once Too', the courageous voices of our students illuminate the pages with their tales of resilience and vulnerability. Through their stories, they not only share their immigration journeys but also showcase the strength of the human spirit and the power of empathy,” Science Park principal Darleen Gearhart said. “These young authors inspire us all to embrace diversity, celebrate difference, and recognize the beauty in every individual narrative.”

100% of profits from the sale of the book will go right back to the authors through student fund accounts at Newark Public Schools and Science Park High School, dedicated to providing resources for students who are experiencing food or financial insecurities.

“‘We Were Strangers Once, Too’ is a masterpiece of empathy and resilience. Through the courageous voices of Newark's students, we travel continents, languages, and even hardships, to discover the power of shared humanity,” Newark’s Superintendent Roger León said. “These stories stand as symbols of hope, and what is possible, by reminding us to embrace diversity, celebrate difference, and find strength in our collective journey."

“We Were Strangers Once, Too,” is edited by Science Park High School English teacher Shawn Adler. In 2023, Mr. Adler was among the shortlist of nominees for the $1 million Varkey Foundation Global Teacher Prize, in partnership with UNESCO. Identified as the “Nobel Prize of Teaching,” the Global Teacher Prize serves to underline the importance of educators and the fact that, throughout the world, their efforts deserve to be recognized and celebrated. For his work in elevating student voices through narrative, Mr. Adler has been featured on NBC News, CNN, The Wall Street Journal, The Star Ledger, NJ 101.5, and others, while being celebrated at every level of American government, including by President Joe Biden.

Newark, NJ - Newark Public Schools is thrilled to announce that Nakaylah Jenkins, an 8th-grade student at Louise A. Spencer's Elementary School, has been chosen to receive the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) Outstanding Achievement Award (OAA) for the year 2024. This prestigious award recognizes Nakaylah's exceptional contributions to supporting NJHS's five pillars: scholarship, service, leadership, character, and citizenship.

The NJHS Outstanding Achievement Award is a prestigious national award that recognizes only a few exceptional student leaders nationwide. Nakaylah has demonstrated her commitment to academic excellence, and her hard work and achievements have earned her this coveted award, along with a $500 deposit in a 529 college savings account that can be applied towards her higher education.

Newark Public Schools Triumph at NJ State Speech and Debate Championships: Showcasing Brilliance and Leadership in Education and the Arts

[Newark, NJ] In March, the high school speech and debate teams of Newark Public Schools showcased their remarkable talent and prowess at the prestigious New Jersey State Championship Tournament held at the Hunterdon Regional School District in Flemington, NJ. The students not only participated but excelled, clinching multiple state championship titles, thus reaffirming the District's unparalleled excellence in speech and debate.

These state champion students not only brought pride to their schools but also garnered well-deserved recognition and rewards. They were granted scholarships to attend prestigious summer institutes, offering them invaluable opportunities to further refine their skills and deepen their understanding of the art of communication. Moreover, their outstanding achievements are duly honored by the state, with the presentation of the NJ Governor's Award for the Arts, acknowledging their exceptional contributions in speech and debate. Such accolades not only highlight the students' individual talents but also underscore Newark Public Schools' commitment to nurturing and fostering excellence in education and the arts.

Central High School’s senior Ayomide Adekoya, led by Coach Dennis K. Philbert, emerged as a standout performer, clinching the 1st Place State Champion title in both the Dramatic and Oral Interpretation categories.  Central High school team secured the state's 4th Place Speech Team overall.

Arts High School’s junior, Amilah Stuart, under the leadership of David Richardson, also celebrated success, winning the 1st Place State Champion in Improvisational Acting, contributing to Arts High School's achievement as 3rd Place overall in the Small School Speech team category.

Science Park High School’s juniors, Ashley Lourenco and Victoria D. Rengel, led by Coach Jonathan Alston, triumphed as the 1st Place State Champions in Policy Debate.

Superintendent Roger Leon expressed his pride in the students' accomplishments, "The achievements of our students in the state championships speaks volumes about the potential of our youth. Not only are these victories a source of pride for Newark Public Schools, but also for the entire Newark community. [Newark, NJ] Pathways To Peace (PTP), an esteemed international Peacebuilding, educational, and consulting organization, proudly announced the appointment of Mr. Tawheed Rahman, a dedicated teacher from the Newark School of Global Studies (NSGS), as a United Nations NGO Youth Representative.

Pathways To Peace has been actively fostering Peace as a lived reality for over four decades and holds the esteemed designation of being a United Nations Peace Messenger Organization with Consultative Status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). PTP collaborates locally and globally to advance the Culture of Peace Initiative (CPI), working across generations and cultures to support Peacebuilding and engage with organizations that share the vision of global harmony.

Since its establishment in 1981, PTP has partnered with the United Nations to raise awareness and participation in the International Day of Peace (Peace Day), celebrated annually on September 21st. The success of Peace Day has transformed from a local event to a global movement that touches the lives of millions worldwide.

Mr. Rahman's appointment as a UN NGO Youth Representative is a testament to his outstanding leadership and commitment to building better, safer communities. Under the guidance of Principal Ruiz and the administrative team at NSGS, Mr. Rahman has played a pivotal role in the success of the school's Model UN Program. His passion for inspiring young leaders and fostering global Peacebuilding and dialogue has been evident in the remarkable preparation and execution of Model UN conferences and Pathways To Peace workshops.

Newark Public Schools Moving Student Achievement in the Right Direction

[Newark, NJ] The New Jersey Department of Education (NJDOE) identified 20 schools that have met the criteria to exit comprehensive support and improvement (CSI) or additional targeted support and improvement (ATSI) status effective June 30, 2024. Multiple factors informed the decision-making process, including student achievement and other school accountability measures in accordance with N.J.A.C 6A:33 and New Jersey’s approved Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) Plan.

Superintendent Roger Leόn expressed his pride at the District’s progress, “With the efforts of parents, students, teachers, principals, community, and stakeholders, Newark Public Schools is charting a course of continuous improvement, propelling students towards a future defined by progress, quality education, and positive outcomes." He added, “We are witnessing the priorities outlined in The Next Decade 2020-30: Strategic Plan come to life”.

The District extends congratulations to Abington Avenue, Avon Avenue, Camden Street, Eagle Academy, George Washington Carver, Harriet Tubman, Hawkins Street, Hawthorne Avenue, Luis Muñoz Marin, Michelle Obama, Mount Vernon, Newark Vocational High, Park Elementary, Peshine Avenue, Rafael Hernandez, Roberto Clemente, Sir Isaac Newton, Speedway Avenue, Weequahic High, and West Side High who will start next school year by joining the District’s other 36 schools who have not been identified with any support status with the Department of Education.

Newark Public Schools remains dedicated to advancing the priorities outlined in The Next Decade. School principals, in collaboration with stakeholders, have demonstrated unwavering commitment by actively participating in the Annual School Plan (ASP) process. This inclusive approach, coupled with ongoing vigilance, has contributed to notable progress among students, positioning them on a trajectory of continuous improvement. The collective efforts underline the District's commitment to providing a quality education and fostering positive outcomes for its student body.
