Virtual Career Week 2020
May 11 - 15, 2020
Each year, Newark Board of Education hosts an annual Career Day for students in grades 3-8 for an opportunity to learn about various career clusters. During distance learning and COVID-19 transition, School Counselors, Social Workers, and Support Staff throughout the district partnered with community agents to secure live and pre-recorded presentations from various career paths in an effort to bring a virtual learning experience to students via Webex and Google Classroom.
Students were able to interact with presenters, highlight their interests and participate in Q&A sessions on career paths. Students enjoyed the continuation of Career Day with a virtual spin!
The Newark Public Schools Clarity 2020 Strategic Plan and logic model calls on “Game Changers” or activities for students to engage in while they go through our schools, leading them to reinvest, reinvigorate and return to Newark. Game changers include, jobs, apprenticeships, internships and mentoring. Preparing for these game changer experiences must
start early!
- Chris Strumolo, School Counselor and Vanessa Jean-Louis, Social Worker II at George Washington Carver School
"Career Day encourages students to explore their interests and passions while in the process better understand themselves, their community, and the world."
–Hassanah Saunders, School Counselor at Ivy Hill
