Louise A. Spencer School's recent National Junior Honor Society inductees proudly represent their dedication to academic success

In a noteworthy milestone, Bilingual Students have dominated the recent National Junior Honor Society inductees at Louise A. Spencer School, constituting an impressive 80%. The National Junior Honor Society, which recognizes middle school students for their scholarship, leadership, service, character and citizenship, is a testament to the school's dedication to nurturing diverse talents. A dedicated 6th grader, Danny Parra, expressed his pride in being part of the National Junior Honor Society: “It is a big honor for me to be in the National Junior Honor Society. I have worked very hard to learn more English and get good grades in school. I am happy to make my parents and teachers proud of me.”

Newark Public Schools continues to uphold its mission of promoting academic excellence and inclusivity, which is evident in the rising number of students inducted into the National Junior Honor Society each year. This trend underscores the District's focus on cultivating well-rounded students who excel academically and exhibit outstanding character and commitment to community service. The achievement of these bilingual students reflects both their dedication and the success of the District in creating an educational atmosphere that champions linguistic diversity and academic prowess.

Congratulations to the National Junior Honor Society Inductees for their hard-work, dedication, and outstanding achievements!

NBOE Continues its Commitment to Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) Compliance

Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) regulations are a top priority in New Jersey, with the New Jersey Department of Health (NJDOH) and the Public Employees Occupational Safety and Health (PEOSH) ensuring compliance with the IAQ standard N.J.A.C. 12:100-13. Regular visual inspections, moisture control, a checklist, and a preventative plan are all in place to protect individuals from workplace hazards that could exacerbate allergies and asthma.

At the Newark Board of Education's facilities department, all Building Managers and the majority of Facilities Supervisors are well-versed in the IAQ standard. They are trained to identify potential issues and respond appropriately to any reports of poor IAQ. The Environmental Team is dedicated to providing ongoing training and resources to maintain a safe environment with the freshest air quality in New Jersey.

Author Tami Charles visiting Oliver Street School

Oliver Street School recently wrapped up its Black History Month festivities with a special appearance by acclaimed author Tami Charles, known for her New York Times best-selling book "ALL BECAUSE YOU MATTER." The author engaged students in personalized book talks during three sessions tailored for different grade levels (PK-2, 3-5, 6-8).

Ms. Charles captivated students with her heartfelt discussions, leaving a lasting impact on their minds and hearts. Interacting with a best-selling author was a thrilling experience for the students, who were delighted to discover that Ms. Charles is an alumna of University High School. Each session kicked off with an icebreaker activity, leading to a dialogue about the significance of storytelling. Students actively participated by asking the author questions and concluding the sessions positively.

A special thank you goes out to Principal Luis Henriques, School Counselor Brandon Simmons, and Director Michelina Thornton for their collaborative efforts in organizing this enriching experience!

Newark Board of Education Thrilled by Generous Donation of New Scoreboards

Malcolm X Shabazz High School receives new scoreboards
Malcolm X Shabazz High School receives new scoreboards

The District recently received an exciting donation that is set to greatly benefit the student athletes of Malcolm X Shabazz High School. Two brand new scoreboards have been generously gifted to the school, and NBOE couldn't be more thrilled about the positive impact they will have on students and guests.

These state-of-the-art Daktronic scoreboards are not only a symbol of the hard work and determination exhibited by students, but they also provide a significant enhancement to the overall sporting experience. With these scoreboards in place, athletes will now be able to easily view the score, time, and shot clock from any position on the court.

The coordination of this generous donation was made possible by the District's Athletic and Facilities Department, who worked diligently to ensure that these wireless scoreboards could be seamlessly integrated into the school's sporting facilities. Thanks to their efforts, the score table can now be set up in almost any location on the court, providing greater flexibility and convenience.

Special thank you to Jim Leonard from HB Sports & Entertainment for this donation! It is through partnerships like this that the District is able to continue supporting and empowering students in their pursuit of excellence both on and off the court.
