NBOE Celebrates the 2021-2022 Teacher of The Year
“Every year, it is with pride that I announce and introduce the Newark Board of Education’s Teacher of the Year, and this year is no different,” said Superintendent León. It is an honor to have Mrs. Tavares, who personifies what it means to be committed to ensuring that students receive the academic and emotional tools needed to be successful, as the district’s Teacher of the Year.”
Mrs. Tavares has been teaching middle school science at Lafayette Street School since 2014. She was nominated and selected based on her interdisciplinary approach to teaching that centers on student growth, which is both challenging and engaging. As a teacher leader, she is highly respected by her peers and students and was elated by the recognition. She consistently gives back to the profession by sharing her expertise and knowledge of teaching and learning through interclass visitations and mentoring new teachers. Mrs. Tavares has compassion and sensitivity that allows her to connect with her students and others on a personal level.
“I really do appreciate the opportunity to teach here. I truly do love what I do each and every day,” stated Taveras. “My students are getting ready for high school so I try to encourage them to keep going and keep learning inside and outside the classroom.”
Lafayette Principal Maria Merlo said “Jessica is not just a teacher in this class, she's a teacher leader in the school. She has worn so many hats throughout the year to make things possible and I thank her from the bottom of my heart.”
Mrs. Tavares, who was bestowed with the distinction of district-wide teacher of the year, an honor she accepted with joyful tears while her school community beamed with pride, joins 63 other NBOE teachers, who have been recognized for their outstanding efforts in the classroom.
Board President, Dawn Hayes, said “To know that we have the absolute best is heartwarming. May your light shine on all the teachers around you so that they can strive to be the district-wide teacher of the year in the future.”
In closing, Superintendent León shared a special message of appreciation and thanks to all of the teachers of the district for their commitment, dedication, and excellence in the classroom.

Gallaudet University: Clerc Center Collaboration Visits Bruce Street School for the Deaf and Technology High School
Newark, June 6, 2022, The Newark Board of Education welcomes Marianne Belsky, the Chief Academic Officer for the Laurent Clerc Center at Gallaudet University. This three-day visit highlighted our auditory programs at Bruce Street School for the Deaf and Technology High School.
Over the past few years, a delegation from the district has visited the Kendall Demonstration Elementary School (KDES), the Model Secondary School for the Deaf (MSSD), and Gallaudet University in Washington, DC. These schools, in the nation’s capital, serve as the gold standard and leading model for auditory programs across the country. The purpose of our visits was to observe best practices within the classrooms for students who are deaf and hard of hearing, and incorporate that learning into our redesign strategy outlined in the ten-year strategic plan here in Newark. The delegation included Superintendent Leon, Assistant Superintendent of Student Support Services Carolyn Granato, Special Education Director Marilyn Mitchell, the administration and staff of both schools, as well as, students from Technology High School.
This week, the objective of Marianne Belsky’s visit to Newark was to identify training and technical assistance needs to enhance, improve, and modify our existing deaf and hard of hearing program at both schools. During Phase 1, Marianne Belsky, Chief Academic Officer from the Laurent Clerc Center visited Bruce Street School for the Deaf and the Auditory Impairments Program at Technology High School to conduct classroom observations of the programs, review current curriculum materials, and engaged with staff, students and their families. At the conclusion of the debriefing of the site visits today and in moving forward, the Clerc Center will assist the schools and the district in outlining key strategies, professional development opportunities, curriculum recommendations, and facilities modifications to assist us in becoming one of the leading models in the country and one of the preferred schools of choice in the northeast.
In recent years, we visited Katzenbach in New Jersey to highlight auditory programs of excellence here in our great state, and we look forward to working collaboratively with them as well as our friends at these three schools in Washington, DC.

Senior Day 2022
The end of the year for seniors extends an opportunity to celebrate a job well done and embark on milestones recently impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. On June 3, 2022, members of the Class of 2022 participated in the Senior Class Trip to Forest Lodge in Warren, New Jersey. There, students climbed the rock wall, participated in over a dozen carnival-themed booths, danced, and interacted with their peers on 40 scenic acres in Somerset County.
As the 12th-grade students close out their respective high school journeys and open new post-secondary chapters, the shared expectation is that all of our graduates will continue to engage in memorable and enriching experiences as a bridge to what's ahead. The Class of 2022 has accomplished so much--earned over $77 million in college scholarships, saved parents over $12 million by participating in dual enrollment programs, and 146 students earned an Associate's Degree, to name a few incredible highlights. Congratulations to each graduate representing American History, Arts, Bard Early College, Barringer, Central, Eagle Academy, East Side, Malcolm X Shabazz, Science Park, Technology, University, Weequahic, and West Side High School.
