Students from High Schools: Arts, Central, and Science Park School recently had an incredible opportunity to visit the renowned WNYC radio station. Their visit came after their remarkable victory in the state championships for speech and debate. The District's press release caught the attention of WNYC, leading them to showcase the NBOE's exceptional speech and debate programs.

Upon arriving at the studio, the champion students were warmly welcomed and treated to an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour. They had the privilege of engaging with seasoned journalism professionals, who shared valuable tips and advice on pursuing careers in journalism.

The visit to the newsroom proved to be an eye-opening experience for the students. They witnessed firsthand how professionals handle breaking news, including the announcement of OJ Simpson's death. The newsroom buzzed with activity, as former Speech and Debate students from various programs generously shared their contacts and offered guidance on utilizing their forensics skills in journalism.

This extraordinary visit not only provided the students with a glimpse into the world of journalism but also inspired them to pursue their dreams in this dynamic field. The School's speech and debate program continues to shine, thanks to the support and recognition from esteemed organizations like WNYC.

The Newark Board of Education, in collaboration with The Office of Student Life, recently organized a remarkable event on Tuesday, March 26, 2024. The annual Junior College Fair took place at the Prudential Center, attracting a multitude of enthusiastic juniors. This fair served as a fantastic platform for students to connect with college and university recruiters, enabling them to chart their future educational paths. Not only did the juniors have the opportunity to engage with college recruiters, but they also had the chance to interact with esteemed organizations such as the College Board, New Jersey Higher Education Student Assistance Authority, NBOE Human Resource Services, and various community organizations. The anticipation is building as the District eagerly awaits the Fall fair, which promises to bring even more exciting prospects for the exceptional class of 2025!

This school year has been nothing short of amazing as students, staff, and community members joined forces to create a breathtaking mural. This masterpiece serves as a symbol of unity and a powerful tool to promote literacy. The mural showcases high frequency words, which are essential in developing strong reading skills. As students make their way through the hallways, they are encouraged to engage with the mural and read the words displayed. This interactive experience not only enhances their reading abilities but also fosters a sense of community and togetherness.

The Newark School of Global Studies embodies a vision of educational excellence tailored to the demands of the 21st Century. Newark School of Global Studies uses experiential learning and World Language courses to prepare students to break boundaries in language, culture, and traditions. The recent trip to Taiwan underscores this commitment, offering Global Studies Student Ambassadors and staff a firsthand opportunity to immerse themselves in Taipei's vibrant culture and history. Led by dedicated World Language teachers Ms. Luo, Ms. Yin, and Ms. Chen, participants explored iconic landmarks like the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall and the National Museum of Taiwan History while also engaging with the local community.

Such experiences enrich students' language skills and cultural awareness and exemplify the Districts ethos of fostering global citizenship and lifelong learning. Newark School of Global Studies students are not just learners; they are empowered problem solvers poised to make meaningful contributions to the complex global landscape.

This month, students and faculty members of New Jersey Regional Day School collaborated to present a rich and engaging "Arts in Our School" assembly. Under the guidance of music educator Mr. Dolahan, band students performed a wide range of musical pieces featuring songs like "Let's Go Crazy," "We Will Rock You," "Shout," and "Fast Car." Choir students performed a heartwarming multilingual rendition of "Hallelujah," which included sign language and assistive communication iPad technology.

NJRD staff participated in three competitive "Art Chopped" rounds facilitated by visual arts educator Ms. Abend. Like the famous FoodNetwork show "Chopped," staff were given limited supplies to create a timed artwork. Student judges then critiqued the work and articulated each staff member's artistic growth and glow to support their selection of the winner for each round.

Additionally, the program presented several invigorating performances by three different NJRD dance ensembles directed by educator Ms. Dugan. Student dancers demonstrated the primary elements of dance, such as action, energy, force, and levels within each performance. The program culminated with a visually rich celebration of students' artwork, allowing the audience to participate in a simulated art auction fundraiser.

Women’s Wellness Summit Empowers NBOE Women with Resources

The Women's Wellness Summit, hosted by the Office of Federal Programs & Grants, was a huge success on March 27, 2024. NBOE women, dedicated parents and caregivers, came together for a day filled with inspiring conversations, educational workshops, and health screenings. The event emphasized the importance of self-care, ensuring that women are able to take care of themselves in order to better support their children.

Partnering with University Hospital, attendees were able to receive free vision, mammograms, and diabetic screenings. The Office of Early Childhood and The Office of Language Arts also highlighted the importance of reading to children daily, providing books to encourage reading at home. This event strengthened partnerships within the community and reinforced the District's commitment to supporting families in Newark.
