NBOE continued its celebration of reading this month by partnering with schools and families. Kindergarten-3rd grade students received a NBOE tote bag with a letter from the Deputy Superintendent, a school supply kit and a grade-level book. The District’s Parent Liaisons understand the impact of promoting reading and encouraging children to read at home.

Parent Liaisons strive to support families with literacy, promote cultural awareness, and engage families in the love for reading books. Schools celebrated the love of reading and were encouraged to participate in age-appropriate reading activities. Parent Liaisons along with their school staff ensured that their school celebrations were successful in this year’s district celebration.

The most anticipated date this season for Newark parents and students is finally here! On Tuesday, April 18th, 2023 families of students in transition grades throughout the city received match letters confirming their placement for the upcoming 2023-2024 school year. This is a time of excitement for students who are looking forward to receiving their match to one of their choice schools. Families that are new to the school district will be personally welcomed by the staff at their new school.

The Education Center for the Study of Genocide and Human Rights at Rutgers University and NBOE’s Office of Bilingual Education invited two students from the Newark School of Global Studies to participate in a private United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) meeting about its role in education and the crucial role of digital learning in the dissemination of hate speech.

11th grade students, Godsmark Oshuporu and Marie Motino, attended a private two-hour session at the UNESCO headquarters in New York City with UNESCO's Senior Liaison, Lily Gray. Ms. Pilar Veru from the Office of Bilingual Education, Dr. Ismael Khalil from Global Studies, and a group of future teachers from Seton Hall and Rutgers University were also in attendance. Attendees learned of the work of UNESCO in the global education field, UNESCO's most recent projects, the role of the world's digital library, and the challenges of digital learning worldwide.

The Office of Special Education (OSE) celebrated its 5th Annual Autism Acceptance kick-off on Tuesday, April 4th, 2023. This year’s theme is “Make It Personal, Autism Acceptance.” Staff and students district-wide participated in Light-it-Up Blue by wearing blue shirts in honor of Autism Acceptance. The District’s goal is to promote autism awareness, acceptance, inclusion and self-determination for all students, and to encourage the community, educators, families, and friends to create a more inclusive world through acceptance and inclusion.

To embrace this year’s theme, the Office of Special Education has autism teachers partnering with grade-level general education colleagues in their school to engage in inclusive activities that promote awareness and acceptance of students using lesson plans and activities provided by OSE to guide them in this endeavor. At the end of the month, OSE will also have a pizza party to build on peer interactions among non-disabled students. Over 150 Support Staff Attend the 2nd Annual OSL Conference

The Office of Student Life held its 2nd Annual Office of Student Life (OSL) Conference with this year’s theme, Making an I.M.P.A.C.T - Substance Abuse and Awareness. During the conference, the Student Assistance Coordinators (SACs) delivered a comprehensive outline of the newly developed protocol manual and the roles and responsibilities of the I.M.P.A.C.T. Team (Implement, Monitor, Provide, Assist, Collaborate, and Tailor intervention and prevention strategies). The District policy (5131.6) was also featured in the SACs presentation to School Counselors and Social Worker 2s. Attendees had the opportunity to select two breakout sessions focused on responding to substance use, current drug trends, the opioid crisis, and marijuana and the law.

NBOE Students Gear Up for State Testing

Schools throughout New Jersey will administer the New Jersey Student Learning Assessment (NJSLA) in English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, and Science this spring. ELA and Mathematics assessments will be administered to students in grades 3-9 (some students may be required to test in grades 10, 11, or 12 depending on unique circumstances), and Science assessments will be given to students in grades 5, 8 and 11.

Students' progress toward the New Jersey Student Learning Standards in English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science is assessed through the NJSLA assessments. Writing effectively when analyzing texts will be the focus of ELA assessments. Assessments in Mathematics will emphasize applying skills and concepts and understanding multi-step problems that require abstract reasoning, modeling real-world problems, precision, perseverance, and strategic use of tools. Assessments will focus on the application of scientific concepts and practices within the domains of earth and space, life, and physical science. Students will demonstrate their acquired skills and knowledge by answering selected-response items, constructed-response items, and technology-enhanced questions.

NJSLA assessments provide deeper information about student progress than previous tests, making them an important tool for measuring student achievement. The assessments identify areas where a student may need additional support as well as where he or she has mastered the content and can be challenged to go deeper into the subject matter. Test results cannot provide a complete picture of achievement, but when combined with course grades and teacher reports, a clearer picture emerges of student progress and performance can be monitored over time.

The Newark Board of Education ensures a testing environment that follows all protocols and procedures and is not disruptive to students taking the assessments. We are committed to student achievement and these assessments raise the bar for District students to ensure they are on the path to success. It is important that students arrive at school on time during the state testing period. It is important for students to get a good night's sleep and eat a good breakfast. Additionally, students should listen to their teacher during the testing period, use their time wisely, read all test questions carefully, and answer all questions on the test.
