Newark Reads Event Sparks Joy and Literacy in the Community

Speedway Avenue School hosted the much-anticipated Newark Reads Event on May 7, 2024, organized by the English Language Arts Department to promote literacy and a love for reading among students in the Newark community. The event gave students the opportunity to select five free books of their choice, which contributed to its resounding success and made it a memorable day for all participants.

In addition to receiving free books, students were provided with a wealth of valuable resources to support their reading journey at home. These resources included tips for effective reading habits and ways to engage with their new books. The success of Newark Reads underscores the importance of fostering a culture of literacy and providing children with access to books and reading resources. By putting books in students’ hands, the District continues to promote academic success and empower young readers to explore new worlds and unlock their full potential through the power of reading.

Autism Acceptance Kick Off 2024

The Newark Board of Education, Office of Special Education (OSE) celebrated its 6th Annual Autism Acceptance kick-off on Tuesday, April 9th 2024. This year’s theme was “Make It Personal, Autism Acceptance.” This year, the Office of Special Education used the Infinity Symbol, to represent the infinite potential of individuals with autism, as well as their limitless possibilities and abilities. It also serves to remind us that individuals with autism are not limited by their diagnosis and should be recognized for their unique talents and strengths.

Central Office staff helped to kick-off Autism Acceptance by celebrating minds of all kinds and sharing what neurodiversity means to them.  They decorated infinity symbols for the April 9th kickoff on the 4th floor and posted them on our Office of Special Education Autism Infinite Potential Mural. Throughout the month Central Office  participated in various activities to promote autism awareness and acceptance and also beautify  their office spaces in support of Autism Acceptance Month as a Do-A-Thon. Displays were judged and awarded based on creativity, theme, originality, construction, and spirit.

The celebration also kicked off the school-based inclusive activities, where classes in the autism program partnered with grade-level general education peers in their school to engage in inclusive activities that promote awareness, acceptance and compassion of peers with ASD.  Staff, students' parents and guardians were encouraged to participate in the activities and events this month to promote greater understanding of neurodiversity and strategies to support the success of children on the autism spectrum. Our ultimate goal is for educators, students and parents to discuss and initiate daily practices to successfully educate and accept ALL children including students on the autism spectrum.

NBOE Students Shine at the 10th Annual JAZZ HOUSE Music Scholars Showcase

On Wednesday, May 8th more than 150 students participating in the JAZZ HOUSE Music Scholars Program came together to celebrate their achievements after months of hard work for the 10th Annual JAZZ HOUSE Showcase. The event was held for the first time at Newark Museum of Art, featuring ensembles from five Newark Board of Education Schools - John F. Kennedy School, Oliver Street School, East Side High School, Arts High School and Science Park High School.

Science Park High School Senior, Vinicius Santos, was honored as the recipient of the JAZZ HOUSE Musician of Distinction Award; an award given to outstanding emerging musicians who demonstrate leadership, musicianship, creativity and dedication to excellence. As part of the award, Vinicius received a brand new, professional-level trombone from R.S. Berkeley Musical Instruments, along with a year of mentoring from a JAZZ HOUSE professional musician. Superintendent Roger León congratulated and praised students for their dedicated musicianship as well as offered gratitude to Newark Board of Education school music directors and JAZZ HOUSE teaching artists who have collaborated with students every day in the classroom. Additionally, he acknowledged the long-standing partnership that Newark Board of Education has shared with JAZZ HOUSE KIDS. The nonprofit organization based in Montclair, NJ who’s first program with the District began over 20 years ago in 2002.

Achieving Academic Excellence at the Super Essex Conference Karen Fuccello Scholar-Athlete Awards Program

The annual Karen Fuccello Scholar-Athlete Awards program took place on Monday, May 6th at Nanina's In the Park, where the Essex County Athletic Directors Association (ECADA) and the Super Essex Conference (SEC) honored the top scholar-athletes from their member schools. This prestigious event recognized twenty-four exceptional individuals from the District who showcased outstanding academic achievements and athletic abilities. These scholar-athletes not only maintained impressive GPAs but also demonstrated remarkable leadership skills and excellence in their respective sports. Furthermore, they made significant contributions to the community through their dedicated service.

Saturday Community and Transition Fair

New Jersey Regional Day School families, in addition to community members, actively engaged in the Saturday Community and Transition Fair on April 27th. The primary objective of this event was to wholeheartedly embrace Autism Acceptance Month. Families were given the invaluable opportunity to establish connections with community agencies, providers, and vendors who specialize in catering to children between the ages of 5 and 21 with autism and multiple disabilities. In order to alleviate any concerns families may have had regarding the transition from the traditional public school program, resources were made available for transitional planning. Furthermore, families were graciously provided with books to enrich their home libraries. The 71 participants who attended left the fair feeling immensely supported and with an unwavering sense of belonging to a tight-knit community.

The most anticipated date this season for Newark parents and students is finally here! Families of students in transition grades throughout the city were notified of their matches for the upcoming 2024-2025 school year. This is a time of excitement for students who are looking forward to receiving their match to one of their choice schools. Overall, 99% of all kindergarten applicants and 87% of all 9th grade applicants were matched to one of their top three choices.
