Paving the Way for Readers
The District has embarked on a remarkable journey towards transforming literacy education by adopting research-based systematic decoding programs grounded in the science of reading. This initiative represents a transformative change in English Language Arts (ELA) education, empowering educators to deliver high-quality instruction that caters to the diverse needs of students.
The significance of phonemic awareness research lies in its potential to address learning gaps and promote educational equity. By identifying effective instructional approaches to develop phonemic awareness, decoding, and fluency, educators will better support struggling readers and prevent early literacy difficulties. The photos capture the enthusiasm and dedication of both teachers and students, demonstrating the success of this comprehensive plan to enhance literacy skills and foster a love for reading among young learners.
NBOE is proud to implement this bold endeavor and embrace the power of research-based and systematic decoding programs, ensuring Newark students are poised for success.
NBOE Introduces a New Transition Program Designed for Students with Exceptionalities
American History High School has implemented a comprehensive Transition Program aimed at equipping students with the necessary skills and support to transition successfully into vocational life. The program's vision is to foster an inclusive environment where students can cultivate their talents, enhance their self-esteem, and become self-sufficient members of society. Furthermore, the program is aligned with the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards for 21st-Century Life and Careers. Ms. Zainab Kamara, the newly appointed Transition Coordinator at American History High School, is responsible for assisting and preparing students to interact with individuals they may encounter when transitioning into their work-based learning sites. Additionally, Ms. Kamara helps students develop social skills that are essential for adapting to the real world. The program includes a dedicated period where students learn social skills that prepare them for employment. This period provides students with the opportunity to practice for interviews, engage in appropriate dialogue with different individuals, and build rapport with future employers and others. With this program in place, students will develop a success mindset coupled with strong work ethics.
NBOE Experiences a Steady Increase in Multilingual Learner Enrollment
The Newark Board of Education has experienced a remarkable increase in its Multilingual Learner population, with a record number of students now enrolled in English as a Second Language (ESL) and Bilingual Programs district-wide. From 2020 to 2023, the District has witnessed a staggering 78% surge in the Multilingual Learner population. Furthermore, during this same period, there has been a noteworthy 48% increase in students who have successfully passed the Access Test and transitioned out of Bilingual services.
This growth underscores the District's commitment to diversity and highlights the importance of providing targeted support to students who speak multiple languages. To ensure that teachers are equipped to meet the needs of this expanding population, the first-ever ESL NBOE Conference was held on August 30, 2023, providing over 250 ESL teachers with a comprehensive agenda that covered critical topics such as Teaching Language Objectives, Co-Teaching Multilingual Learners, Scaffolding & Differentiated Instruction, and Accelerating Language Learning Through Cooperative Learning.
The Newark Board of Education's efforts to foster an inclusive and thriving educational community serve as a model for school districts across the nation. By prioritizing the needs of its Multilingual Learner population, the District is setting a standard for excellence in education and ensuring that all students have access to the resources and support they need to succeed.
