The Newark Board of Education is firmly committed to promoting effective teaching practices, with formative assessments being a key aspect of the District's educational approach. By incorporating formative assessment techniques in classrooms, dedicated teachers are able to maintain a strong connection with student progress and establish a continuous cycle of valuable feedback.

The integration of innovative tools such as Peardeck and Lumio as regular components of Classroom Formative Assessments (CFUs) empowers students with dynamic learning experiences and immediate engagement. This technology offers invaluable data-driven insights into student performance, providing educators with opportunities to tailor their instruction with precision and access resources that facilitate student excellence and the realization of their full potential. The District takes great pride in prioritizing these methods, which place student growth and teacher effectiveness at the core of the educational journey.

On October 14, 2023, Doctors Sampson Davis, Rameck Hunt, and George Jenkins, commonly referred to as The Three Doctors, returned to their former educational institution to host the annual Mentor Day organized by their foundation. This event saw the participation of numerous accomplished professionals who, alongside The Three Doctors, provided University High School students with valuable education and career guidance. The Mentor Day program aligns directly with the foundation's motto: "Our children cannot aspire to be what they cannot see." Through this initiative, students are paired with mentors from various professional fields who share their expertise in education and careers, assisting students in setting realistic life goals.

The foundation's three esteemed alumni, known as the Phoenix alumni, made a pact as young teenagers to remain united, pursue higher education, graduate, and ultimately become doctors. Presently, Dr. Hunt serves as a Board certified internist at University Medical Center at Princeton and holds the position of Assistant Professor of Medicine at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. Dr. Jenkins fulfills the role of Assistant Professor of Clinical Dentistry at Columbia University. Lastly, Dr. Davis is a Board Certified Emergency Medicine Physician at multiple emergency departments in New Jersey. Recognizing the significance of mentors and support systems throughout their educational and medical journeys, they established The Three Doctors Foundation. This organization offers free health, education, and mentoring programs to youth and families in the NY/NJ area. Current students at University High School who aspire to succeed in their post-secondary plans receive coaching and strategic guidance to achieve their dreams, with the expectation that they will return to support future generations, thus creating a cycle of success.

The Newark Board of Education (NBOE) is pleased to announce the All Schools Fair will take place on Saturday, November 4, 2023, at Newark Vocational High School, from 10:00am to 2:00pm. The NBOE is currently making preparations to ensure that this event is exceptional and beneficial for the community. Families will have the opportunity to engage with school representatives from K-8 schools, high schools, and Pre-K providers on a one-on-one basis. The Newark Enrolls application for the 2024-2025 school year will commence on November 4th at 3pm. All 8th grade students throughout the city and students attending non-NBOE preschool sites are encouraged to attend the All Schools Fair and apply. Families can select up to 8 choices on the Newark Enrolls application. School staff across the city will be available to assist all families with the preparation and submission of their applications. The application window will close on February 2, 2024.

We proudly announce the historic achievement of Micah Charles, a senior at Barringer High School. Micah has been elected as one of New Jersey's SkillsUSA officers, becoming the first student from Newark to hold this esteemed state position. His accomplishment is a testament to the dedication and hard work of Barringer's staff, administration, and Micah throughout his four years of high school.

Micah was invited to attend the Washington Leadership Training Institute (WLTI) from September 23-27. The annual WLTI conference, held in Washington, D.C., provides students and advisors from across the United States with the opportunity to advocate for skilled trades and receive advanced leadership training. Participants also explore famous monuments and museums, attend panel discussions with government officials, and participate in a wreath-laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery.

At Barringer, Micah is a dedicated Varsity Basketball team member and actively participates in several extracurricular activities. He is also a member of the Superintendent's Council of Students and dreams of becoming a Carpenter. We are proud to announce Micah's achievement of receiving the National Statesman Award, a significant milestone. We congratulate Micah on his success and wish him all the best for his future aspirations.

The Newark Board of Education, in collaboration with the Office of Student Life, hosted its annual fall college fair for high school seniors on Friday, September 22, 2023. This year's event took place at the NJIT Wellness and Events Center, situated at 104 Lock Street, Newark, NJ. Over 50 esteemed college recruiters participated in the fair, engaging with more than two thousand seniors who were actively preparing for their post-secondary plans. Notable recruiters included Rutgers University, Rowan University, Bloomfield College of MSU, Montclair State University, Morgan State University, the Malcolm Bernard HBCU representative, United States Military Services, the High School Academic Support Program, and NJIT.

Seniors were provided with the Class of 2024 College Fair Resource Guide and a bookbag to collect college applications and scholarship materials. Furthermore, students came prepared to meet recruiters, equipped with copies of their transcripts for review during the fair. Overall, seniors made the most of this invaluable opportunity to explore a wide range of post-secondary options upon their high school graduation.
