The Newark Board of Education congratulates the remarkable Class of 2024, recognizing their unwavering commitment and diligence. As a testament to their outstanding accomplishments, students have earned placements in esteemed educational programs, received generous full-ride scholarships, and even attained Associate Degrees alongside their high school diplomas. The District has organized many enriching opportunities, including college tours, trade fairs, career panels, and comprehensive college and career counseling services. Moreover, students have been provided with rigorous academic preparation, encompassing an array of offerings such as Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate courses, dual enrollment, and vocational education programs.

Newark Board of Education Celebrates Success at Annual Soccer Jamboree

The Newark Board of Education, in partnership with the US Soccer Foundation, proudly announces the successful conclusion of another year of the Soccer for Success program at the annual Office of Extended Learning Soccer For Success Jamboree held on May 4, 2024, at Ironbound Recreation Stadium.

The event, a true celebration of community spirit, brought together 45 co-ed teams from 27 elementary NBOE schools. It was a day that transcended skill levels, showcasing the dedication and talent of students. Families from across the district, united by their love for soccer and healthy living, gathered to enjoy a day filled with spirited competition and community bonding. This shared passion and unity are what make our district strong.

The Newark Board of Education commends all participating teams, coaches, and mentors for their commitment and sportsmanship throughout the tournament. These young athletes have displayed their soccer skills and exemplified the values of teamwork, discipline, and healthy habits fostered through the Soccer for Success program.

The Jamboree's success is a testament to the Newark Board of Education's commitment to providing enriching opportunities. We are dedicated to promoting physical activity, skill development, and character-building for students across the district.

Former White House Chefs Bring Presidential Flavors to Newark Vocational High School

Former White House chefs Guy Mitchell and Michael "Woody" Raber recently brought a taste of presidential elegance to the students of Newark Vocational High School. Trained at the prestigious Culinary Institute of America, Mitchell, and Raber showcased their culinary expertise with a Presidential-themed meal, accompanied by captivating storytelling sessions aimed at inspiring the budding chefs of tomorrow.

The event was met with enthusiasm and admiration from students and staff alike. Principal DeSantis expressed her gratitude, stating, "It was an honor to have the chefs visit our school and share experiences that will positively impact the lives of our students."

Throughout the interactive session, Mitchell and Raber emphasized the importance of dedication, creativity, and perseverance in the culinary world. They recounted their experiences serving at the White House. Moreover, the chefs emphasized the significance of staying true to one's roots while embracing innovation. They encouraged the students to explore diverse culinary traditions, allowing them to develop their unique culinary identities.

For many students, this experience was a culinary delight and a source of inspiration and motivation. Rakeeyah Chaney, a senior, stated, "It was a cool experience to meet chefs who worked in the White House and to actually watch them make things so fast."

In a reflective moment, Chef Mitchell commented, "With your principal, administration, instructors, and that beautiful kitchen, I know that something is working here at this school."

Events like these serve as a reminder of the transformative power of mentorship and the impact that passionate individuals can have on shaping the future generation. Through their visit, Mitchell and Raber not only imparted culinary wisdom but also instilled a sense of purpose and ambition in Newark Vocational High School students.

NBOE Celebrates Success in Interdisciplinary Professional Development

On May 3, 2024 NBOE Speech-Language Specialists (SLS), Occupational Therapists, and Physical Therapists came together to kick off the celebration with interdisciplinary professional development. In partnership with The SteppingStones Group, NBOE related service providers were educated on the most up-to-date research in the area of Sensory Processing. Related service providers then worked collaboratively to utilize the sensory processing strategies learned to design effective therapy sessions for students. Interdisciplinary collaboration provided an opportunity for noted providers to learn from one another and to elevate service delivery to District students.

Many of NBOE SLSs are heavily involved in the New Jersey Speech-Language Hearing Association (NJSHA), NJ’s professional organization for SLSs. This year, 11 NBOE SLSs attended NJSHA’s Annual Convention in Atlantic City. They presented sessions and publications, were able to gain valuable insights from industry experts, learn about new research in Evidence Based Practices, and participate in interactive workshops and discussions. Building Strong Reciprocal Partnerships and working as an Integrated System of Support, NBOE related service providers celebrate Continuous Learning for All.

Arts High School proudly celebrated academic excellence in Spanish and Portuguese languages on Thursday, May 2nd, 2024. The school's dedication to fostering linguistic proficiency was evident as they inducted 20 students into the prestigious Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica (SHH). This ceremony, a testament to the student's hard work and dedication, marked the inaugural event for the school's SHH chapter, with 17 students being recognized for their achievements in Spanish and 3 in Portuguese.

Uniquely, Arts High School offers Ambassador Memberships in the SHH program. This distinction is designed for heritage speakers with exceptional Spanish or Portuguese proficiency, even if they need to meet the language course requirements. The school's dedication to multilingualism was further highlighted by several students demonstrating exceptional competency in Portuguese, achieving a score of 5 or higher on all STAMP 4S Portuguese assessment sections. In addition to inducting student members, Arts High School also acknowledged honorary members who have actively supported the SHH's mission of promoting interest and achievement in Hispanic and Luso-Brazilian studies. These community leaders included Councilman Luis Quintana, Board Member Daniel Gonzalez, Newark Board of Education Superintendent Roger León, and Art Teacher and Latin Band Director Kennis Fairfax.

NBOE and NCLC Join Forces to Boost College Readiness

The Newark Board of Education (NBOE) has recently announced a new collaboration with the Newark City of Learning Collaborative (NCLC), College Access: Research & Action (CARA), and Mentor Newark. This partnership aims to address the existing gap in college and career guidance for high school students. As part of this initiative, current college students, known as "Bridge Coaches," will be brought back to their alumni high schools to work alongside School Counselors. Their role will be to provide support to graduating high school students in various areas such as college applications, FAFSA and NJAFAA applications, scholarship applications, and the transition to college.

To kickstart this collaboration, a meeting was held on Monday, May 20, 2024 at Rutgers University - Newark, where NBOE School Counselors came together to discuss the upcoming work. Each high school will have the opportunity to recruit and recommend their own Bridge Coach(es) for hiring purposes. This collaborative effort aims to ensure that students receive the necessary guidance and support to successfully navigate the college application process and transition into higher education.
