Kishona McCray Is Recognized for Extraordinary Athletic Achievement at Central High School

Newark Public Schools recently honored Kishona McCray at the May Board Meeting. Kishona, a member of the Blue Devils Girl’s Track and Field Team, is a graduating senior at Central High School, where she has excelled and is recognized as an extraordinary athlete.

Newark Public Schools recently honored Kishona McCray at the May Board Meeting.  Kishona, a member of the Blue Devils Girl’s Track and Field Team, is a graduating senior at Central High School, where she has excelled and is recognized as an extraordinary athlete.

This year, Kishona won the Newark Public Schools Championship in the 100 meters, 200 meters, 100 hurdles, and 400 hurdles.  In addition, she won the Essex County Championships in the 100 meters, 200 meters, and 100 hurdles, and is the first athlete to achieve that triple win.  Kishona also won the Super Essex Conference (SEC) Championship – Colonial Division in the 100 meters, 200 meters, 100 hurdles, and 400 hurdles;

In addition, Kishona was the NJSIAA Meet of Champions winner in the 100 hurdles and the first female athlete from Newark to win the NJSIAA Meet of Champions in the 100 hurdles.  The last time Newark earned this award was in 1991.

Kishona also won the NJSIAA Group II State Championship in the 100 hurdles and 400 hurdles; in addition to the NJSIAA North II Group II State Championship in the 100 meters, 200 meters, 100 hurdles, and 400 hurdles;

Finally, Kishona has earned five NJSIAA Group II State titles, 8 Group II State titles, 11 Essex County titles, 17 Super Essex Conference titles, and 19 NPS Individual titles, 11 Central High School records, and is undefeated in 2016 in the 100 hurdles in the State of New Jersey;

Kishona McCray was ranked #1 in New Jersey in the 100 hurdles and in the Top 20 in the United States; and she was ranked #2 in New Jersey in the 400 hurdles and #9 in the United States, as well.  Kishona will attend Northern Illinois University in the fall on a full athletic scholarship.

Barringer: NJSIAA, Section 2, Group 3 Champions

The 37-year drought is over.

Fifth-seeded Barringer withstood a 20-point third quarter from second-seeded Chatham, and then outlasted the Morris County champion in overtime to emerge from the NJSIAA/ShopRite North Jersey, Section 2, Group 3 final at Chatham High School with a 56-53 win for the program’s first sectional title in close to four decades!

The 4th quarter started with Chatham leading 40-35 after outscoring Barringer 20-10 in that 3rd quarter. The lead almost evaporated in the first few minutes of the 4th with James McNeil scoring 4 points to start the quarter.

“Fourth quarter I had to step up and score the team some buckets,” McNeil said. “I’m a senior on this team and I didn’t want to go home.”

McNeil led Barringer with 19 points and Sadiq Griggs helped run the Barringer offense with a game-high seven assists.

The athletic department would like to thank all of the staff, students and community members who supported the team during this season.

Weequahic Boys’ & Girls’ Track Teams win NJSIAA State Sectional Outdoor Track Championships


Congratulations to the boys’ and girls’ track teams at Weequahic High School for capturing the NJSIAA State Sectional Outdoor Track Championships on Saturday May, 24, 2015!

Having both genders from the same school win a state track title is a rarity and has not been accomplished in Newark since the 80’s.

Coaches Kycied Zahir, Eddie Greene and Mahdi Sumter should be commended for their guidance in helping the Indians bring home the title.

Weequahic Girls’ Track Wins First Ever State Relays Title

Congratulations to the Weequahic Girls Indoor Track Team and to head coach Kcyied Zahir on winning the school’s first ever State title in the NJSIAA Group 1 Relays. The victory at the state meet marks the first time a girls team from Newark has won a state relay title since 1997.

The team effort was bolstered by performances from Senior Yaminah Smith’s anchoring of the 4×400 relay team as well as freshman Carla Hines 0.01 second lean-in win over Metuchen in the 4×200 relay.

Capturing the state title follows on the heels of Weequahic winning its second straight Super Essex Conference American Division title in December.

“Everyone has worked so hard for so long for this,” said Zahir, in his 12th year as head coach at Weequahic. “I can’t tell you how much this means to me, the girls, the program and the city of Newark. I am so proud of what these girls did today. They were amazing.”

Shabazz celebrates its first ever sectional title, a 14-6 win over Dunellen

With the bad taste of a last second loss in the sectional final last year still in their mouths, Shabazz returned to the scene of that setback on Saturday and replaced that frustration with jubilation with a heart-pounding 14-6 victory over Dunellen in the NJSIAA/SportsCare Institute North Jersey, Section 2 Group 1 final at Kean University in Union.
