Newark, NJ [May 23, 2024] Newark Public Schools proudly celebrates a significant milestone in its educational landscape. Building on the forward-thinking vision outlined in The Next Decade: 2020-30 Strategic Plan, University High School established a groundbreaking partnership with Essex County College. This blended dual enrollment program, intertwines the academic rigor of high school with the rich opportunities of a college education.
The first cohort consists of Abrianna Joseph, Chermya Pope, and Adrian Ottah who attended various courses during the school day, as well as at the Essex County Campus. These three University High School scholars have an earned 60 college credits and graduated from Essex County College with a Liberal Arts Associates Degree on Thursday, May 23, 2024. Next year’s cohort will have nine scholars slated to graduate.
“The addition of this partnership," Principal Hamilton affirms, "actualizes a commitment we made to the school community to provide our students ample opportunities to leave behind a legacy of excellence and graduate high school with an advantage that sets them apart." Her words capture the fundamental belief in the potential that every student can rise above challenges and embrace the opportunities that lie ahead, as symbolized by the school’s mascot, the Phoenix.
Superintendent Leὀn proudly remarked, “This is a shining example of empowerment and encouragement, and in the belief that with determination, perseverance, and support, every student can soar like the Phoenix”.
“University High School is my alma mater,” said Board President Council. “And I could not be prouder of these students and cannot wait to see all that lies ahead as they chase their dreams”.

Newark Public Schools celebrates them, as they continue on their path, they serve as an inspiration not only to their peers but to anyone with a dream and the courage to pursue it relentlessly.
