[Newark, NJ] Life Through My Eyes is an integral component of the Aurway Repertory Theatre’s Dear Life Project, a poignant initiative centered around mental health and suicide prevention. This one-act coming-of-age play seamlessly weaves together the elements of a traditional play with the power of music and monologues, offering an insightful exploration of life through the lens of a young Black boy.
The play serves a dual purpose: not only does it shed light on the intricacies of mental health, depression, and anxiety, but it also equips students with valuable tools to navigate these challenges. Following the compelling performance, attendees actively engaged in a candid talk-back session, creating an open dialogue on the themes presented. To further enhance this reflective experience, each participant receives a personalized journal, encouraging them to capture their thoughts and insights during the discussion. This immersive approach not only raises awareness but fosters a community committed to understanding and addressing mental health issues.
Superintendent León shared the importance of providing a creative way to address the needs of students and staff, “Aurway’s performance was masterful. It allowed us to address sensitive issues with empathy and understanding,” he stated.
“We value all of our students,” said Board President Council, “and today is a perfect example of our collective efforts to do just that.”
“To have the privilege of sharing this artistic journey in the place I proudly call home adds a profound layer of satisfaction. Moreover, the ability to impart this creative experience with students in our shared community enhances the fulfillment even further,” said Lawrence Dandridge, Arts High School alumnus and author of the play.
