The Newark Board of Education (NBOE), in partnership the New York Giants, proudly unveiled the JFK Heart of a Giant Outdoor Fitness Center in Newark, NJ. This state-of-the-art fitness facility, situated on the school grounds, symbolizes a commitment to fostering health and wellness throughout the school community.
The inspiration for the fitness center dates back to 2019 when former JFK student Duane Coleman, who played football for Weequahic High School, received the prestigious Heart of a Giant Award, accompanied by a $10,000 equipment grant for the Weequahic’s Football program. Principal Jill Summers-Phillips seized the opportunity, reached out to the Giants to see if they would extend their support to JFK, where Duane was a student. Responding with enthusiasm, the Giants pledged their backing.
Superintendent Roger León enthusiastically said, "The fitness center is a huge hit for the students and staff at the JFK school. The students and staff remain passionate about promoting fitness and wellness, and I'm confident they will make the most of this new addition that will inspire others to lead healthier, happier lives."
The fitness area, a unique addition to JFK, is designed to cater to a wide range of fitness levels and abilities. It offers a complete workout using eight exercise stations with fifteen different exercises, all adaptable to individual needs. Several stations are also designed for handicap accessibility, ensuring everyone can participate at their own pace.
"We are thrilled to have a committed partner like the NY Giants who bring this all-inclusive fitness area to JFK," said Board President Hasani Council. "This is a great opportunity for our students, staff, and we are grateful for the Giants' continued support."
Mr. Ethan Medley, NY Giants Director of Community Relations & Youth Football stated, “We believe in the power of active play. We believe in what it does for relationships and physical fitness. We are proud to be able to put some great equipment on the ground that is appropriate for the school and that everyone can use”. He added, “This is what community looks like and we were thrilled to be a part of the day.” Medley was joined by NY Giants players Dante Miller, Timmy Horne, Isaiah Hodgins, and John Michael Schmitz
