Newark, NJ — The Newark Board of Education is pleased to announce a landmark agreement with the Newark Teachers Union on a comprehensive five-year contract, reflecting a shared commitment to excellence in education for students, teachers, and staff.
This is the third NTU contract negotiated under the leadership of Superintendent Leὀn, who stated, “This contract reflects our commitment to valuing and investing in all of the members in the Newark Teachers Union, recognizing their pivotal role in shaping the future of our students, improving our schools and the organization as a whole, and providing the City of Newark with schools worthy of every child.”
First-year teachers will earn a new starting salary of $65,000. Over the course of the next five years, this starting salary will increase to $74,000 by the fifth year of the contract. All of the components of this contract, well beyond salaries, will be unpacked in the days leading to its ratification early next month. This contract has been designed in a collaborative effort between the District’s negotiating team, NTU President Abeigon, and the incredible leadership of the NTU negotiating team.
Board President Council said, “This landmark agreement represents a significant milestone in Newark's educational landscape, reaffirming the collective commitment to excellence, equity, and empowerment within the district. We are proud of the Superintendent, both negotiating teams, and our entire staff. We look forward to sharing all of the details of this contract once ratified.”
