Summer 2022 was filled with artistic experiences, exhibitions, and performances for students participating in the NBOE Visual & Performing Arts Academy. Middle school students selected an arts major (dance, instrumental music, vocal music, theatre, or visual art) and minor to study during the program. All participating students also engaged in creative writing. Over five weeks at Arts High School, young artists explored new techniques, strengthened their skills, and shared their love of the arts with peers from across the city of Newark. Students also took trips to the Newark Museum of Art and The GRAMMY Museum. As a culmination of the program, young artists presented their creations in an art exhibit, while dance, music, and theatre majors shared their talents in an inspiring performance.
High School Musical Theatre students studied acting, singing, dance, and production to present Disney’s High School Musical, JR. Students attended a performance of Dear Evan Hansen on Broadway as part of their summer learning. In the High School Visual Arts Academy: Culture Creators, students experimented with various art techniques and visited The Metropolitan Museum of Art to deepen their knowledge and skills. At the conclusion of the program, all students presented their creations as part of an exhibit. Arts High School also hosted AileyCamp, a six-week dance camp for students to learn dance and explore their creativity. AileyCamp final performances were held at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center. Student artwork from both the middle school and high school summer programs will be exhibited at 765 Broad Street in October as part of the Newark Arts Festival.
