Culinary Arts
The Culinary Arts program provides students with the academic and technical preparation necessary to pursue high-skill, high-demand careers in the food service industry. The knowledge and skills are acquired within a sequential, standards-based pathway program that integrates hands-on projects, work-based instruction, and leadership development. The Culinary Arts program is designed to prepare students for technical training, postsecondary education, and entry to a career.
Students pursuing this career pathway have in-depth, hands-on experiences that emphasize industry awareness. Sanitation and safe food handling; food and beverage production; nutrition; food service management; and customer service utilizing state of the art kitchens that include a bakery, a full-service restaurant, retail food operations (store-front and catering), are all things the student will experience.
This will result in the attainment of essential culinary, employability, and supervisory knowledge, techniques, and skills, which are paramount for success in both the industry and post-secondary education.
Hospitality and Tourism
If you like travel and are intrigued by the idea of helping others explore the beauty, culture and cuisine of the world around them, you will want to enroll in the Hospitality and Tourism program.
This course of study introduces students to management, marketing and operation of restaurants and other food services, lodging, attractions, recreation and travel services.
With greater opportunities for business travel, people are traversing the globe in growing numbers. As a result, the hospitality and tourism is one of the fastest growing industries in the world. This course introduces the hospitality and tourism industry, including hotel and restaurant management, cruise ships, spas, resorts, theme parks, and other areas. Students learn about key hospitality issues, the development and management of tourist locations, event planning, marketing, and environmental issues related to leisure and travel. The course also examines current and future trends in the industry.
Graphic Arts Print and Production
Graphic Design and Print Production will provide students with the fundamental skills and information needed to structure and creatively organize complex visual communication in both the traditional and digital environments.
Students will be able to effectively communicate verbal and visual ideas through creativity, conceptual development, effective organization of information and the use of understanding form, color and design. Students will use the Principles and Elements of Design, learn the history of Graphic Design, design symbols/logo branding development, use color theory and typography creatively and effectively.
Students will employ critical thinking, aesthetic/design judgment and become skilled in the tools in the In the Print Shop the student will learn to operate the latest Printing equipment from Xerox, Ricoh, Hewlett Packard and Cannon. By providing a real work environment with time spent working in a live Print Shop which serves Newark Public Schools the student learns career ready skills, the obligations and responsibilities to make for a successful career, techniques necessary to create and produce professional designs and illustrations to be used in the advertising and digital art fields.
This course provides practical experience in studio processes, group and self-critique/discussions. The Graphic Design curriculum is designed to enable students to be prepared for entry-level job opportunities in the field or entry to college.
