Our School
Speedway Avenue School is a Pre-K through Eighth grade elementary school located in the West Ward of Newark, New Jersey overlooking Vailsburg Park. The original Speedway Elementary opened in 1917 as a brick building between Dassing and South Orange Avenues. It was built to relieve the overcrowding at Alexander Street School. In 1911, the students moved into the new Speedway School, and the old building became a charter school. The new Speedway Elementary opened in 1910, replacing the original school and provided some relief for overcrowding in other West Ward schools. Speedway was rebuilt in 2010 to replace the old building on Speedway Avenue.
Our building feature’s state-of-the-art equipment; auditorium; cafeteria; health clinic; regulation high school gym with rock climbing wall; smart boards in every classroom; computer labs; full chemistry lab; science discovery lab; media center; dance studio; and choral and instrumental music rooms. six “self-contained” special needs classes, along with special needs resource classrooms.
