Teacher Academy

The Office of Admissions at East Side High School is committed to recruiting highly motivated young adults from all neighborhoods in Newark.  Our mission is to provide a safe environment in order to ensure that all students graduate ready for college and/or career pathways equipped with the academic, social and critical thinking skills necessary for success in the 21st Century. The core beliefs we hold are knowing that every student can achieve in a safe, pleasant and nurturing learning environment that fosters high expectations where students develop self-esteem and self-advocacy skills.

Teacher Academy & Red Hawks Rising Dual Enrollment Program
Newark Board of Education (NBOE), East Side High School and University High School have continued to work together since the 2021/2022 school year to ensure that Newark has a pathway for those children with a passion for teaching to become educators and advocates for social justice. The teacher academy is proud of its industry partner the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) and its post-secondary institution partner Montclair State University (MSU) who meet monthly in order to reach tangible goals that layout a cohesive pathway for students to become teachers and eventually return to Newark as an employee. Currently, the start of dual enrollment courses is projected for the Fall of the 2021/2022 school year. Students enrolled in their third year of the academy will start taking dual enrollment courses their Junior year of High School. Each year offers a different Work Based Learning (WBL) experience in another school while interning and participating in Big Brother/Big Sister programming for k-1st grade students within the district.

This grow-our-own partnership comprises:

  • The Teacher Academy - a 4-year Career and Technical Education (CTE) pathway to teaching approved by NJDOE;
  • Red Hawks Rising - a dual-enrollment program at MSU for 11th and 12th grade Teacher Academy students to earn up to 30 credits.

With cohorts at East Side and University High Schools, the CTE curriculum centers on social justice and why teaching matters.

  • This grow-your-own partnership aims to recruit and prepare students to enter the teaching profession and return to their communities.
  • The partnership aligns with the need to increase Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) and particularly Black males in the teaching profession.
