East Side High School offers the largest selection of Athletics in all Newark Public Schools

The athletic program is an integral part of the total educational process at East Side High School. Young people learn a great deal participating in interscholastic athletics. Determination, perseverance, sportsmanship and teamwork are some of the valuable lessons that can be attained through athletic participation. Athletics plays an important role in helping the individual student develop a positive self-concept as well as a healthy body. Athletic competition fosters school spirit and develops pride in the school and community for participants, students and spectators.

Through athletics we seek to provide a wholesome form of physical activity for as many students as possible. We will make every effort to offer our student-athletes the best in equipment, facilities and coaching, in order to provide them with an enjoyable and rewarding athletic experience. While the reputation of our school and community is enhanced whenever its representatives excel, by far the greatest rewards and satisfactions are derived by those who actually participate on our athletic teams.

We believe that the soul of our school can be reflected in what occurs before and after the normal academic day. This extension of the school day, whether it be in athletics, in the arts, or in clubs sets the tone for the school year. If we can keep students involved and concerned beyond the classroom, we are bound to have more positive effect on them in the classroom. We are aware of the tremendous obligations we have to the student-athletes in our care and we shall always strive to do our best.

East Side girl "true trailblazer" Olivia Barbas

“She is fearless, and to me, a true trailblazer,” Cordero said. “Olivia is one of the good stories in our school. She represents East Side well. She is one of the finest academic students at East Side.

“I was 99 percent sure she could try out for baseball, but it wasn’t until Justin (Perino) called the NJSIAA that we knew for sure,” Veltre said.

“When I tried out, I wanted to make the team based on skill and not gender,” Barbas said. “I was nervous because it was my first time playing organized baseball. But it was a nervous excitement.”

“The first time I saw her in March you could see she caught and threw the ball without fear,” Cordero said.

“She fit in right from the jump,” said East Side senior and co-captain Jeffery Almonte. “As soon as I saw her play I said ‘oh, yeah, she’s good.’”

Achieving Academic Excellence at the Super Essex Conferenceards Program

The Essex County Athletic Directors Association (ECADA), along with the Super Essex Conference (SEC), recognized the top scholar-athletes from its member schools at the annual Karen Fuccello Scholar-Athlete Awards program on Tuesday, May 9th at Nanina’s In the Park. Among those recipients were twenty-three of the District’s best and brightest. NBOE’s scholar-athletes posted impressive GPAs and displayed leadership and prowess in their respective sports, all while making important contributions to the community through their commitment to service.

Lacrosse Captain Joao Silva

Lacrosse Captain Joao Silva Surpassed a Milestone

Red Raider Lacrosse Captain Joao Silva surpassed a milestone only 240 other lacrosse goalies have done in the sport's history, 500 varsity saves. Joao started his first varsity game with only 3 days of preparation and since then has exemplified the program's "One Goal" mentality. He lost all but 3 games in his Sophomore campaign to season-ending knee surgery. He dedicated himself to rehab and physical therapy to come back better than ever. In the closing minutes of the 2nd period against Passaic Valley, Joao made his 7th save of the game and 500th of his career. He currently holds a 59.6% save percentage in his Junior year.
