Our staff and students of the month are our North 2 Group 4 Sectional Champions Boys Basketball Team Led by Head Coaches Anthony Tavares and Bryan Garvin along with Assistant Coaches John Thompson, Lamar Williams and Uron Hawkins.  Our team finished 29 and 5 and won the Essex County Tournament for the fifth time and was ranked number 7 in the state throughout the season.  They defeated Linden High School in the Sectional Group final as they were able to secure home court advantage with their difficult schedule and power points.     Our fourth year senior captains Jahid Jenkins and Shamir Johnson lead the way along with seniors Hassan Ceesay, Keron Williams , Deandre Speight and Izalm Jerome. Other students who also contributed greatly were Anas Amos with his very capable ball handling and Mikah Johnson with his rebounding skills.

Not only is our team successful on the court but also in the classroom.

Jahid Jenkins has a cumulative GPA of 3.2 making Super Honor Roll for the past two cycles and has scholarship offers from Rutgers and Nyack University.  Shamir Johnson has a cumulative GPA of 3.2 and has also made Super Honor Roll for the past two cycles while he entertains an offer from NJIT.  Another top player Hasan Ceesay is committed to a four year scholarship to StonyBrook University where he joins another East Side graduate on a scholarship.

Our basketball team provides countless opportunities to our players and has put East Side High School Basketball on the map as being a powerhouse in basketball.  This could not have been accomplished without the hard work of their coaching staff.   So this month we would like to honor our coaches on the basketball team for being the staff persons of the month.  They come from all different departments.  Our head coaches are Vice Principal Anthony Tavares and Dean of Students Bryant Garvin.  In 2014, they were honored as the Star Ledger Co Coaches of the year.  Each year, they put out a winning team and can compete with anyone.  Their coaching skills have led East Side to countless honors and awards along with providing endless students with scholarship opportunities.  Their winning system includes coaches Lamar Williams, John Thompson and top recruiter Uron Hawkins.  Each coach does their part to add to this very successful program.  Our East side community would like to acknowledge and thank our coaches and players for providing us with a team that we are all so proud.  And thank you for the endless excitement in a very successful season.
