Meet the Department
The Science Department of East Side High School is committed to fostering an environment whereby students experience a comprehensive science program that is supportive, engaging, and challenging. My father went to East Side before they had any bilingual program and so did much of my family when they came from Cuba after Fidel Castro took over. I teach partly to help students who, like my father and many members of my family, struggled to learn the English and adjust to the culture in the United States. I also teach because I recognize that not everyone gets the same opportunities in life based on a variety of circumstances. I want to do as much as I can to ensure that our students get an equitable education and learn essential life skills to be successful in the future.
In my free time, I like to spend time with my wife, my daughter (and soon to be daughters), my family, and my friends. I love running, skating, painting (mostly landscapes at this point), gaming, programming (for both gaming and for the school), reading(I am a proud member of the East Side book club), listening to music, dancing, singing karaoke, and a bunch of other things. Two of my favorite things in life are trying new things and learning something challenging.

I enjoy working at East Side for the people - students and staff alike. That's what truly sets things apart is the authenticity and support of the people in the building. As variable as many days can be, we are a reliable and welcome constant.
My hobbies are doing the daily New York Times crossword, baking, dining out, rewatching old seasons of the Real Housewives, and playing volleyball (I'm a setter).

My favorite thing about being a bilingual chemistry teacher here at Eastside is that my students make me feel at home. I love this profession and I love Chemistry, but it has been even better to do what I love and have this piece of home (Brazil) here on the other side of the continent.
I like reading and spending time with my family and friends.

During her studies at NJIT, Ms. Carman first experienced EastSide High school as a student teacher. After completing her degree and graduating, she decided to stay and join the red raider family. She spends her spare time being a great mother to her daughter. Ms. Carmen loves watching her daughter develop and express herself through dance, soccer, drawing, and sometimes even slime!

Everyone is extremely helpful. It's such a close group of people that it makes being a first year teacher much less stressful. Couldn't have asked for a better school to be in.
I love listening to music, watching sports and spending time with family.

I like working at East Side because I am able to work with a diverse student and staff body. As an immigrant myself who had wonderful bilingual teachers in Newark, I am happy to give back to the community that raised me after leaving my home country.

I chose East Side because even when I was a student at the school, I saw the community and support teachers had for each other to find ways to best support their students. I fortunately still experience 10+ years that has I've began working here during my student teaching days.
My hobbies and weekends usually consist of journaling, reading, going to the gym and playing Pokemon Go.

Having lived most of my life in the Ironbound, East Side would seem to be the most natural place for me to teach, but in reality it became an option when I decided to pursue Bilingual Certification. What I like about East Side is the culture of caring and acceptance that is truly evident between staff and students.
When I'm not teaching, I like to spend time with family and friends. I also enjoy photography, cooking/baking, gardening, and travelling.

I grew up in Newark. As a student, I attended Newark Public Schools. As a teacher, I am now grateful to work at East Side High School because I am able to teach in the very same community in which I was raised. It is a privilege to get to serve such a diverse group of students and families who come from a plethora of different countries and cultures. Despite our differences, we all share a mutual understanding of what it means to grow up in Newark, which is what motivates us to show up everyday, working and learning together towards a brighter future.
Fun fact - I am a triplet!
