The Band and Orchestra Department includes String Orchestra, Woodwind Ensemble, Brass and Percussion Ensembles, Concert Band, Jazz Band, Music Technology and Recording, and Music History and Theory.
Beginning-level instrumental music students will work toward understanding, and ultimate mastery, of various musical concepts - all major and minor scales, articulation, rhythmic accuracy, sight reading, musical terminology, ensemble playing, etc.
More advanced students will focus on characteristic tone, rhythmic accuracy, intonation, phrasing, sight reading, and expression through a variety of literature, all of which are critical for students who intend to pursue music at the collegiate level. They will also learn intermediate music theory.
All students will learn to listen critically to music, while acquiring the skills necessary to be part of a successful musical organization through membership in a structured musical environment. Participation in this major will include rehearsals, sectionals, individual lessons, solo work, and a variety of performances.
The curriculum is further enhanced by master classes, guest artists, and collaborative programs with the New Jersey Performing Arts Center, The New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, The Newark School of the Arts, The Thelonius Monk Institute, Berklee College of Music, Montclair State University, and other professional partnerships.
Graduates of the Music Department at Arts High School include Wayne Shorter, Woody Shaw, Seymour Rosenfeld, Mort Lindsey, John D'Andrea, and Charlie Calello.
