Newark 350
West Side Campus is joining the Newark community in celebrating Newark’s 350th birthday. Currently, the marquee in the front of the building is displaying a birthday message to our great city and a banner will soon follow in the main lobby. Also, teachers from the Social Studies Department have created lessons centered on Newark’s rich history and will begin to infuse them in their classes for the remainder of the month of May. Some topics being taught include the celebration of the different cultures that exist in Newark, the early colonial settlements in the Newark territories, and the local and national impact of Newark and its civic leaders during the Civil Rights Movement. Earlier this school year, the West Side Campus was awarded a grant based on an event they created that celebrates Newark’s birthday and involves students, school faculty, and community members.
