Technology High School houses the secondary education Auditorily Impaired program for Newark students who are deaf or hard of hearing. Also, students from out of district who are deaf or hard of hearing may attend this program. The hearing levels of the students in the program range from mild loss to profound loss. Because of this, Technology High School’s AI program uses the total communication philosophy to educate its students. The staff uses oral communication, signed English, and/or American Sign Language during instruction.

The students are enrolled in either inclusion classrooms or self-contained classrooms for the deaf or hard of hearing. Teachers of the deaf enter the inclusion classrooms to provide in-class support services for these students. In addition, a number of students who are enrolled in inclusion classes receive interpreter services. Students in self-contained classrooms receive small-group instruction by a teacher of the deaf. All lessons follow New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards and are tailored to their specific needs.

All classrooms are equipped with sound field FM systems for amplification of the teachers’ and students’ voices. The AI staff includes certified teachers of the deaf, certified educational sign language interpreters, and personal aides. Related services for these students include interpreters, speech, and counseling.
