At Technology High School, the Department of Mathematics focuses on getting students college and career-ready. We strive to target the needs of all our students in order to help them with all aspects of obtaining acceptance into a college/university or career-ready path when graduating from Technology High School.
We offer many courses from Algebra I all the way to AP Calculus. These courses include but are not limited to, Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, Pre-Calculus, Calculus, and AP Calculus. Our department uses Pearson enVision for our Mathematics curriculum, as well as, infuses technology in our classrooms.
Algebra 1
Algebra I is the beginning course of college prep mathematics at the high school level. The course is designed so you build a foundation in basic algebraic operations, functions, and properties. Emphasis is also placed on creating algebraic models to represent real-life phenomena. Mathematical vocabulary and notation will be strengthened and extended by applying them in solving real-world solutions.
Algebra II
Algebra II is a continuation course of college prep mathematics at the high school level. The course is organized around families of functions, including linear, quadratic, exponential, logarithmic, radical, and rational functions, with the infusion of precalculus concepts throughout. As each family of functions is studied, students will learn to represent them in multiple ways as verbal descriptions, equations, tables, and graphs. Emphasis is also placed on creating algebraic models to represent real-life phenomena. Mathematical vocabulary and notation will be strengthened and extended by applying them in solving real-world solutions.
Geometry
The Geometry course is designed to emphasize the study of Euclidean Geometry as it covers required concepts regarding definitions, postulates(axioms), reasoning, and writing proofs. Topics covered in this course include constructions, logic and proof, parallel and perpendicular lines, transformations, triangle congruence, similarity, trigonometry, coordinate geometry, circles, three-dimensional models (volume and surface area analysis), and probability. Emphasis will be placed on developing critical and analytical thinking skills as it relates to logical reasoning and making connections to real-world situations.
Calculus
Calculus is designed to give students an overview of Calculus topics such as limits and continuity, derivatives, anti-derivatives, and integrals. The course is to support students who plan to take Calculus in college.
AP Statistics
AP Statistics involves the study of four main areas: exploratory analysis, planning a study, probability, and statistical inference. According to the College Board, upon entering this course, students are expected to have mathematical maturity and quantitative reasoning ability. Mathematical maturity could be defined as a complete working knowledge of the graphical and algebraic concepts through Math Analysis, including linear, quadratic, exponential, and logarithmic functions. In contrast to many math classes, this course will require reading the text. This AP Statistics course is taught as an activity-based course in which students actively construct their own understanding of the concepts and techniques of statistics.
