English Language Arts Curriculum
An integrated English Language Arts, social studies, and 21st century Life and Careers education curriculum provides learners with the knowledge, skills, and perspectives needed to become active, informed citizens and contributing members of local, state, national, and global communities in the digital age. Students learn fundamental concepts about reading, writing, speaking, listening, language, government, citizenship, geography, economics, technology and innovation, culture and perspectives, and history. The focus of instruction is on strengthening core academic strategies and skills, while developing academic and general knowledge.
The study of these disciplines focuses on concepts that enable students to think critically and systematically about regional, national, and global issues, as well as economics and the roles that literature, reading, writing, and communicating play in learning. Career awareness, democratic values, the rights and responsibilities of American citizens, and how key people and events contributed to the development of the American heritage are examined. Exploration of cultural universals enables students to realize how the availability of resources, the changing environment, and innovation impact everyday life and career and financial choices.
All teachers strive to prepare students to be successful students on standardized assessments and throughout their lives. Park Elementary also encourages students to access our school library, the Newark Public Libraries and to read at home.
