Transition
New Jersey Regional Day School provides a comprehensive educational and life skills program. The program transcends our school walls to include various off-site facilities. Transition from school to adulthood is the focal point because it directly impacts our students’ futures. We believe that transition is a lifelong learning process, that when done effectively, it will bridge the school to the adult world. This plan is derived from a collective vision incorporating parents, staff, students and the community.
Every student who is 14 years or older has a school-based job. These students are trained by the job coach and Transition Educator. Throughout the school year they work toward independence and dependability. Every student who is 16 years or older has at least 3 different community job experiences. Students establish community relations, apply learned school based employment work habits, and build social interaction skills. Students in our Transition School engage in one shared time program experience. Activities related to Functional Vocational Evaluation are practiced. Students attend a weekly Workers Meeting, where students talk about their experiences. Agendas from these meetings focus on topics such as; attendance, appearance, attitude, building positive self-image, team building, utilizing strategies to increase frustration tolerance, recognizing and naming common work skills, distinguishing between productive and non-productive work habits , and recognize common work skills.
