Academics
At Mount Vernon the expectations for excellence are dramatically different than they were just five years ago. Today’s students must become not only academically proficient, but also capable of adapting their classroom learning to real-life situations. Moreover, the school must leverage new technologies to bridge the real world with the classroom.
The Common Core State Standards
The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) are national standards that provide a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn, so teachers and parents know what they need to do to help them. The standards are designed to be robust and relevant to the real world, reflecting the knowledge and skills that our young people need for success in college and careers. With American students fully prepared for the future, our communities will be best positioned to compete successfully in the global economy.
Newark Public School's Curriculum Guides
In addition to the CCSS Newark has Curriculum Guides which are aligned with the Standards as a guide for instruction in the district.
Homework
Homework is an invaluable tool that enables students to continue to explore the subjects they discuss during the day. Learning does not end with the final class period of the day. Children need to gradually develop independent study habits to carry them well into the future. The District requires homework everyday and provides homework packets for holiday and summer breaks. The goal of each assignment is to allow for continual practice of subject matter that will lead to the mastery of each concept.
