Newark School of Fashion & Design Inaugural Class Heads to Misa Hylton’s Fashion Academy, Sponsored by Gucci

[Newark, NJ] Before the Newark School of Fashion & Design (NSFD) opens its doors in September, the inaugural class will already have made their introduction into the world of fashion – leaving a mark that establishes the school’s legacy. On Monday, July 12, 2021, twenty-one students of NSFD attended Misa Hylton’s Fashion Academy Jr. Fashion Camp (MHFA), where they’ll spend the rest of the week immersed in interactive activities and workshops taught by fashion industry professionals. The student designers will learn the fundamentals of style-identity, communication, goal-setting, personal development and confidence, led by Ms. Misa Hylton, herself. “This is an incredible opportunity for students. The MHFA will accelerate the novel instructional program offered at the Newark School of Fashion & Design” said Superintendent Roger León.
Ms. Hylton, known as a “Fashion Architect, Revolutionary Creative, and a Pioneer” in the world of music and fashion has made contributions to the industry for over twenty-five years. She is accredited for “creating iconic looks that simultaneously capture an unforgettable moment while setting the stage for what everyone will want to wear next.” With the likes of clients and colleagues such as: Sean “P. Diddy” Combs, Queen Latifah, Mary J. Blige, Missy Elliott, Rapper “Lil Kim”, and many, many, more – Misa Hylton has shaped and influenced most of what we’ve come to know today in fashion.
“I am honored that Newark School of Fashion & Design students have been invited to participate in the Misa Hylton Fashion Academy: Future of Fashion Camp experience!” stated Sakina Pitts, Principal of Newark School of Fashion & Design. “This first opportunity for our students to learn from and engage with Misa Hylton as one of the industry's top image architects is one that will surely be a marker in the start of their journey into the world of fashion.”
Newark Board of Education President, Dawn Haynes said, “We are so excited that our students will have a fashion education experience that allows them to tap into their creativity and influence the future of fashion.”
Keeping in line with NSFD’s vision, students will have the opportunity to engage and interact in a dynamic community where they will be allowed to manifest their creative style, pioneer new design innovations and influence the world of fashion. Principal Pitts also shared, “I am confident that their participation in fashion camp will serve to immediately expand their scope but also serve to bridge Newark School of Fashion & Design with the Misa Hylton Fashion Academy as an Industry Partner.”
Among her many contributions, Ms. Hylton serves as a teacher and mentor – shaping the future designers and stylists of the world. Students that have participated and graduated from the Misa Hylton Fashion Academy, have gone on to work for companies such as: Essence Magazine, Dolce & Gabanna, Harper’s Bazaar and many more. With a focus on high school students ages 14-18, the camp was created to give students early exposure to the power of fashion and the arts. The overall goal of the program is to build the self-esteem of teens and teach essential life skills necessary to succeed in the fashion industry. The program, in its fifth year of summer programming and 9th season of existence, will be sponsored this year by the Gucci Changemakers Grant.
Overcome with excitement about their first day, the NSFD students couldn’t stop talking about all that they’d learned and the day’s take away’s. Angelina Armijos, an incoming freshman of NSFD shared “Day 1 of Fashion Camp was amazing! It was an experience that will get me one step closer to my goal of having fun while working in creative ways. I like how everyone opened up, and it was a safe space to speak. Everyone was so positive, and it was encouraging!" Her classmate, Khaye Roberston following her in classmate’s sentiments, shared “The stories from the Camp Leaders were inspiring and encouraging. The camp was helpful in supporting us with finding out where we fit in the fashion community. The highlight for me was learning about each other through our own fashion and how fashion is expressed in our communities."
