Filipa Alexandra Silva
Principal
Ms. Filipa Silva was born and raised in Newark by immigrant parents. She attended Ann Street School as a bilingual student and continued her education at East Side High School. While at East Side High School, Ms. Silva excelled in the sport of softball and played varsity for four years. Her love and dedication to the sport led her to receive an athletic scholarship to Drew University. During her time at Drew, she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in American Studies and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education as a crossover student at the College of St. Elizabeth.
Ms. Silva began her professional career in Newark to give back to the city that afforded her many great opportunities. She worked at Roberto Clemente School for thirteen years and then at Hawkins Street School for four years. As the need for English as a Second Language (ESL) teachers grew in the district, Ms. Silva enrolled at William Paterson University and earned her ESL certification. She taught ESL for the last two years. Ms. Silva was afforded another opportunity to take on the role of School Operations Manager (SOM) at Salomé Ureña Elementary School. The role of SOM made her realize that her career was intended to go beyond the classroom and serve as an instructional leader. Ms. Silva enrolled at Grand Canyon University, where she earned a Graduate Degree in Educational Administration. She has been working as a Vice Principal for the last three years. The transition between positions solidified her calling to educate and lead students and staff.
Ms. Silva’s life revolves around education and her two beautiful sons. As a Newark native and a mother, she knows first-hand the advantages and the challenges of growing up, attending school and working for the city of Newark. To continue her career as Principal of a school in Newark where she was a student, displays the commitment and love she has for the city as well as its children.
