Drama Department
The Arts High School Drama Department offers a professional training program for young actors, with a curriculum built around units in acting, physical techniques, theater history, and script analysis. The drama student’s course sequence is designed to promote both artistic and academic success through daily reinforcement of reading, writing, performance, and play production techniques. These classes prepare students for professional careers in stage, film, and television, as well as entrance into college, university, and conservatory departments of Theatre, Speech, and Communications.
The Arts High School Drama Department also has the distinct advantage of a well-designed and equipped drama suite, including a black box theater and multiple performance spaces. Students have an opportunity to learn and grow through the various aspects of literature, writing, theatre, and collaboration in a variety of intimate spaces.
The rehearsal/performance process is an essential part of our training program. Activities and materials are selected which have universal themes, as well as direct relevance to students. Students are required to participate in after-school activities in their major.
Notable graduates of our Drama program include Savion Glover, Michael B. Jordan, Crystal Clarke, Kim Hawthorne, Taurean Blacque, Shakeem Evans, Hasan Manning, Sharif Pugh, and Darnell Williams.
