World Language
First Avenue School’s World Language class is a program that teaches students to communicate in a second language (Spanish). Through communication students use language to engage in conversation, understand and interpret spoken and written language to build the vocabulary. The presentation and use of the target language in class is by using repetitive communication, gesture, pictures, physical actions, song, and total physical response (TPR). The TPR allows students to respond physically while going through the pre-production phase of language acquisition by carrying out commands showing that they understand without yet being able to speak. In the first year of Spanish, students engage in fun activities designed to help them learn Spanish which is the primary language of instruction.
