Vocal Music
The First Avenue School Choral experience supports and reinforces the learning outcome for the classroom music program. By providing opportunities for choral education at the elementary and middle school levels, students establish a foundation for continued involvement and success in choral ensemble performances. In addition to the musical benefits of choral performance, choral experience can provided a building block for life-long learning by developing social skills, encouraging community involvement and enhancing social and academic skills.
There are three levels of the choral program at First Avenue. Primary Chorus is open to students in grades 1-3. These students sing unison or partner songs. Junior and Senior Chorus are audition choirs. Junior Chorus is for grades students in grades 4-5. These students primarily sing in two part harmony. Senior Chorus is for students in grades 6-8. These students sing in three part harmony. In addition to the choral program, First Avenue also has a chime and handbell program. Chimes are open to students in grades 5-7. Chimes are the training ground for students to become members of the handbells. Students in handbells are in grades 6-8.
During the school year students are afforded the opportunity to perform in school and around the community. Junior and Senior Chorus have performed at the High Note Festival and Music in the Parks event where they have received Excellent and/or Superior ratings.
